Its only a few weeks in 2016, and already your generous donation is making a difference in the lives of children, families and their communities in Vietnam! Our focus for this year will be on education: increasing knowledge about safe water use, hygiene and sanitation, and how to prevent disease and illness. Your donation truly goes a long way in changing the lives and health of so many children in Vietnam, and the work for 2016 has already begun!
From December-January, the Center for Preventative Medicine in TT Hue Province where MEDRIX works kicked off the new year with a short workshop for preschool staff members and parents. It was a lot of information that was greatly appreciated by the participants, who were eager to learn how to better protect their children! The training course had 52 teachers and schoolmasters, as well as school medical staffs from 25 preschools of Phong Dien District in TT Hue Province.
"The training workshop provided knowledge and skills on disease prevention in schools, practicing hand-washing steps with soap, personal hygiene for children, and practice choking interventions when the child have choked foreign object or drowning hazards. The class was very welcomed by the participants and was very useful for the preschool teachers."
Despite an abundance of water in many disadvantaged regions of the world, it is not always safe to drink. Further education efforts are needed at a community level to ensure that people know how to ensure their water is safe for consumption, and how to end the spread of disease through unsafe water use. Through sustainable efforts, slowly we can reduce disease and illness that are a result of poor and inadequate water access and sanitation. The World Health Organization recently explained that
Our program starts at a basic level: providing clean and safe water for children to drink at school and at the clinics they visit for check-ups. Installing hand-washing stations at preschools and teaching the kids how to wash their hands and to use soap. For many children, this is the first time they will use this basic health commodity that is simply unavailable in many rural and under-served areas of Vietnam. Teachers and community leaders teach children about germs and why its so important to practice hygiene daily and to use and drink safe water, when available.
But we don't stop there: community leaders help educate families about the importance of safe water in preventing disease and illness, sanitation and hygiene education, and food safety. They’ll be able to share this new knowledge and promote healthy hygiene habits that will help decrease sickness from water-borne diseases in rural areas. Healthy kids stay in school to complete their education instead of being at home due to illness and sickness. And then they share these practices with their siblings, grandparents and other extended family members. This education is so crucial because without it, installing water systems is only a temporary solution. These kids deserve more than just a temporary relief: they deserve a future full of opportunity that comes from being able to stay in school and learn healthy habits that will truly transform their communities.
Thank you for helping MEDRIX make a difference in the lives of children and families in Vietnam! Your donations and support are very appreciated, and truly go a long way to providing hope and health for many boys and girls who dream about being able to finish their education!
