On Nov 16th a small team from MEDRIX and the Preventative Medicine (Public Health) Department visited six schools in poor rural areas of cemtral Vietnam. The purpose of the trip was to see the water treatment systems in operation in schools.
The first three schools were in the mountainous region near the border with Laos and near the infamous Ho Chi Minh trail. The area’s forest was decimated from heavy spraying of Agent Orange during the war. Today, 40 years later, the region still struggles to overcome the past but there are real signs of hope.
The good news is that the school staff we interviewed love the MEDRIX sponsored water treatment systems that were installed recently. The teachers trust the quality of the water, appreciate the ease of use (compared to boiling) and especially like the “good taste” of the water. And the kids enjoy a getting their owm drink from the water system.
Here is a clear picutre of one of the systems funded by this project. Note the cup rack on the left -- each child has their own cup complete with their initials painted on the bottom. The system is robust enough that the children are allowed to "self serve" their drinking water.

Next, we visited three schools in the coastal area, one of the poorer areas of TT Hue province. Again, the teachers and administrators were very happy with the water systems.
Thanks to all who have donated to make safe drinking water a reality for children in this region of Vietnam.
