This project will complete a safe water project for children at Mt Matedzi Secondary in Manicaland District. The school has an enrollment of 168 learners who battle for clean water in long queues at a community borehole . The project will set up pipes and taps in the school premises so that learners can safely access drinking water and water for the toilets . Children are currently missing out lessons as they spend time seeking water , this also affects their performance .
Access to clean water is one of the hardest resources to attain in rural Zimbabwe. Schools without safe & reliable water sources pause as health hazards as learners & teachers risk drinking contaminated water, using dirty toilets & also compromised Menstrual Hygiene Management for girls. The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened the situation as learners & teachers need water for handwashing. In most rural schools and communities in Zimbabwe children and adults travel long distance to access water.
The organization drilled a borehole at the school but has not completed the process of putting pipes& taps. This project seeks to pump water into the school yard through setting up pipes , a tank and 2 water taps. Having taps inside the school will give the learners and teachers better access to clean water for drinking, handwashing and use in the toilets especially for girls during menstruation. The piped water will relieve the learners from battling for water with the community members.
The project will provide 168 learners with safe water in their school. The outbreak of diseases related to unsafe water like cholera and typhoid will be reduced in and out of school. Girls will not miss school when on their periods as there will have access to water to clean up . This also has an impact on school attendance and performance for girls. Nine teaching and non-teaching staff will access clean water within a close radius, this will reduce teacher flight to other schools.
