41 Babies, Zero Hearing Screens

By Nicole Werner | Clinic Director

This year, we welcomed 41 babies into families in our care. Not one could receive a newborn hearing screening, because there is no screening available anywhere in our region.

Hearing loss is one of the most common conditions present at birth. When it is caught in the first months, children can get support during the critical window for language and learning. When it isn’t, it often goes unnoticed until a child is a toddler who isn’t talking, and by then that window is already closing. For families along the Costalegre, that delay is the only option right now.

We want to change that. We are raising funds to buy a portable newborn hearing screener and train our midwives to use it. This would bring the first newborn hearing screening program to our region. Thanks to our first donors, we’ve raised $140 toward our $10,000 goal.

Why our clinic is the right place to start: Families already come back to us. This year we provided 201 pediatric visits and 63 postpartum visits. That means we can screen babies shortly after birth, rescreen when needed, and help families get referrals for further testing.

Our next milestone: When we reach $6,000, we can order the device and begin training, with a goal of screening every baby born at CCM by January, 2027.

Thank you to the donors who believed in this from day one. A gift of $15 covers screening supplies for one newborn. Sharing this page with friends who care about children’s health helps too.

With gratitude,
Nicole Werner and the CCM team
