Every baby deserves the best possible start in life. This project will establish the first newborn hearing screening program in Mexico's Costalegre region by equipping CCM with a portable auditory screening device and training staff in its use. Early detection of hearing loss is critical for language, learning, and social development, yet many infants in rural communities are never screened. Your support will help ensure that every baby born at our clinic receives this important service.
Thousands of newborns worldwide experience hearing loss, yet many are not identified until months or years after birth. Early hearing loss can affect language development, learning, and social-emotional well-being. In rural coastal Mexico, routine newborn hearing screening is not consistently available, meaning some infants may miss the opportunity for early diagnosis and intervention during the most critical period of development.
Costalegre Clinica de Maternidad seeks to establish the region's first comprehensive newborn hearing screening program by purchasing a portable auditory screening device and training staff in its use. Every baby born at the clinic-and eventually babies born throughout the surrounding region-will receive a hearing screening shortly after birth. Families of infants who do not pass screening will receive support navigating follow-up testing and specialist care.
Early identification of hearing loss allows children to access intervention during critical periods of brain development, improving language, educational, and social outcomes. This project will establish sustainable newborn hearing screening services in an underserved region and ensure that hundreds of infants receive timely screening and referral each year.
