Preparing Rural Students for the Digital World

By MONICA | COUNTRY DIRECTOR

Dear Friends, As our recent scholarship graduates prepare to join universities and colleges across Kenya this September, we have been reflecting on what it truly means to prepare a young person for higher education. For many of these students, university will be their first experience in a learning environment where assignments, communication, and research are done almost entirely online. Yet most come from rural schools with limited access to computers and digital technology. To bridge this gap, we invited our recent graduates to join our Youth Digital Literacy Programme. Over the past few weeks, they have been building practical skills in computer literacy, email communication, online research, digital safety, and the responsible use of AI. They have also explored graphic design, 3D printing, and other digital tools that are shaping today's world of work. One student, Idah, shared after her first experience with 3D printing: "I had heard about 3D printing before, but I never understood how it actually works until today. Now I'm thinking about how this could be used to create agricultural tools in my community." Moments like these remind us that preparing students for university is about more than paying school fees. It is about giving them the confidence and skills to thrive once they get there. Thank you for making this possible. Your support continues to open doors and ensure that these young people arrive at university ready not only to learn, but to contribute to their communities and shape their own futures. With gratitude,
