This water project across the Rift Valley region of Kenya, is targeting 40+ schools and impacting approximately 420 pupils in each. We build on the success of 10 previously completed schools, where clean and sustainable water sources have already made a positive impact. With an expected reach of over 16,800 students, this initiative aims to extend the transformative benefits of clean water, reducing water borne diseases, enhancing education and community well-being.
Rural schools in rift valley Kenya face many challenges related to water scarcity and access to clean water. These challenges include limited access to safe water sources, erratic rainfall patterns, waterborne diseases, gender inequalities in water-related responsibilities In many cases, girls particularly are responsible for fetching water, lack of awareness about sustainable water management, inadequate sanitation facilities leading to high absenteeism with girls being most affected.
This project addresses water scarcity in rural Kenyan schools by providing reliable alternative water sources through water harvesting tanks. This ensures consistent access to clean water for drinking, hygiene, and cooking, leading to improved health and sanitation. Reduced absenteeism, particularly among girls who often bear the burden of water collection, the project enhances educational opportunities and promote gender equality. This has led to a noticeable decrease in waterborne diseases.
The project ensures a reliable alternative water source, guaranteeing long-term access to clean drinking water for students, staff, and surrounding communities, improves health for over 20,000+ community members, and children, decreases incidences of waterborne diseases, reduces cases of absenteeism, improves academic performance, increased engagement in other social and economic activities and improved sanitation for all in the community especially children and women.
