Breaking Barriers to Education in Kenya

1. Overview

Fauza Foundation through Breaking Barriers to Education in Kenya as one of it's pillars has continued supporting vulnerable and financially disadvantaged learners by reducing the financial barriers that prevent them from accessing and completing their education.

During this reporting period, the organization paid tuition fees for all learners currently enrolled in universities through the next academic year, providing greater financial stability and allowing them to focus on their studies without the immediate burden of outstanding fees.

The organization also provided substantial financial support for school upkeep and other essential needs, helping learners meet some of the day-to-day costs associated with staying in school.

In addition, we supported skills development by assisting one learner to attend driving school toward obtaining a driving license and another learner to attend computer college to acquire valuable computer skills. These practical skills are intended to improve their future employment and income-generating opportunities.

Looking ahead, the organization plans to onboard more additional needy children into the program, enabling more vulnerable children to access and continue their education.

2. Impact

The support provided during this reporting period has strengthened the educational stability and future prospects of our beneficiaries.

Ensuring continuity of university education

By paying part of the tuition fees for all current university learners through the next academic year, the organization has removed some major financial barrier to their continued education.

Supporting students beyond tuition

Education involves more than tuition fees. Students also require support for accommodation, food, transportation, learning materials, and other basic needs. The substantial upkeep assistance provided during this period has helped reduce these financial pressures and enabled learners to remain focused on their education.

Building practical skills

The organization recognizes that education and practical skills are both important in preparing young people for independent and productive lives.

One of the beneficiaries who didn't make a University threshold was supported through driving school, providing an opportunity to obtain a driving license and potentially access wider employment opportunities.

Two other beneficiaries were supported to attend computer college, where they developed computer skills to improve their competitiveness in today's job market.

These interventions support our broader goal of helping beneficiaries gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to become self-reliant and economically productive.

Reaching more children

The organization plans to onboard additional needy children into the program. This will enable us to extend educational support to more children facing financial hardship and give them an opportunity to remain in school and pursue their potential.

3. Challenges

The rising cost of education and the general cost of living continues to place financial pressure on learners and their families. Beyond tuition, expenses such as accommodation, food, transportation, learning materials, and technology can make education difficult to sustain.

Another challenge is meeting the needs of an increasing number of vulnerable learners. While the organization would like to support every deserving child, our ability to expand depends on the availability of financial resources.

The planned onboarding of additional needy children will therefore require additional support to ensure they receive consistent assistance throughout their educational journey.

There is also a need to help learners transition from education to meaningful employment and financial independence. This requires not only academic qualifications but also practical skills and opportunities. Continued investment in skills development, such as driving and computer training, will therefore remain important.
