The learning never stops at Boys and Girls Clubs!

By Melanie Diong | Senior Development Officer

We are well into the hot summer weather and school has officially been out of session for a month! Although a break from formal school might be happening, at Boys and Girls Clubs across Canada the fun and learning never stops! Here are a few updates on what’s been happening in our Clubs on the education front:

Rogers Raising the Grade (RRTG) Graduations and Paving the Way for Success

This year, over 20 Rogers Raising the Grade youth graduated from high school and are getting ready for post-secondary education in the fall! Rogers Raising the Grade was developed to increase academic skills and high school graduation rates for youth at risk. Believing that with education, anything is possible, Rogers Youth Fund partnered with BGCC to provide young people with the tools they need to succeed in today’s classroom. As one staff member puts it, “The fact we’re able to offer Rogers Raising the Grade gives kids the chance to have a place where the focus can be academic, but we also work at fostering physical and emotional growth - which helps academically and in the kids’ everyday lives.” Many more young people are on track to cross this threshold next year, opening the door to a new world of opportunity through education! A big congratulations to all of our graduates!

Post-Secondary Scholarships

Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada is thrilled to announce the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada Scholarship Class of 2014! Through the support of our generous partners, we've provided 34 Post-Secondary scholarships to our amazing youth from across the country. Our scholarship recipients have been notified and are busy getting ready for their first year of post-secondary education in the fall. We only regret that we cannot provide a scholarship to everyone who applied – they are all truly deserving!

Summer Learning Programs at Boys and Girls Clubs

Many of our Boys and Girls Clubs continue summer learning programs during their summer camps. These are academic programs designed to combat summer learning loss and narrow the opportunity gap by providing quality summer programming in a safe and caring environment. The loss of academic skills over this period is widely known by teachers who spend valuable time during the first months of school re-teaching forgotten concepts and skills to students. Research also indicates that summer learning loss is a major barrier for children living in poverty, as they are not given the same opportunities as their counterparts. By offering these summer learning programs, children are able to participate in a variety of academic, recreational, and educational activities during the summer months that they would not otherwise experience.

Thankfully, because of caring people like you, our children and youth continue to have the support they need to help keep their grades on track and achieve success in school. We are so grateful for your continued support. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of young Canadians across the country. We look forward to providing you with more updates about our important work in the months ahead!
