Dear AUBG Friends and Supporters,

During the past months, our primary focus was to ensure the health and wellbeing of our community. As the state of emergency was declared on March 13, AUBG had to suspend all in-person activity on campus and all lectures and classes were moved online. Most events had also been rescheduled for next semester including the long-awaited commencement ceremony of our graduating seniors.

At this moment, it is hard to predict with certainty how things will turn out in September; therefore, we are working on different scenarios in order to be better prepared for the future. Nevertheless, we do look forward to reopening the residential campus and returning to in-person teaching. We hope we can soon get back to creating the Holography lab and other exciting developments we had planned for our Science Lab!

Stay safe and healthy! We are coming back soon with more updates!

We marched into 2020 feeling even more motivated to provide our students with comprehensive hands-on experience they would enjoy. We are very excited with how far we’ve come and we wanted to share with you how exactly we managed to achieve this, as well as what we plan to do next. This report includes a review of our past actions as well as the actions we plan on taking going forward.

Since the start of the project, we have raised $10,181 which we used to acquire the basic lab equipment and new work stations. The feedback we received from donors, students, staff and other constituencies pushed us to work even harder on this amazing project! And thanks to all of our combined efforts and passion about the project, we managed to attract the attention of the local Blagoevgrad station of the Bulgarian national TV who made a short segment on the opening of our brand new lab!

Shortly after we were able to finally create a Physics major which also prompted the graduating class of 2019 to donate money towards the upgrade of the Science Lab as a dedication of their Senior gift to the university. Our admission’s team also joined our cause and organized a Specialty Coffee and Sweets bake sale dedicated to the AUBG Science and Environmental Lab. Most importantly, many different constituencies shared our vision about the Science Lab and the importance to truly deliver the American style of education to all of our students.

As our winter break came to an end, we are right back at it! We are currently in the process of creating our very own Holography lab! This will allow students to record their own three-dimensional holograms, which, in addition to being very exciting, lets them get a grasp of the intricacies of interference phenomena. Additionally, the main components of a holographic lab, such as optical table, laser, beam splitters, etc. provide the setting for advanced interferometry experiments using a Michelson-Morley or Mach-Zender scheme. In the future we envision this becoming the base for quantum-mechanical experiments with photons.

We also wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of our donors for their contributions and to encourage all the rest to consider joining us however they can: as a donor, supporter, advocate. We are very happy with what we have achieved so far, but we still have a long way to go and we need your help to make this happen!

Since its establishment in 1991, AUBG has been striving to promote the American values of tolerance, equality, and cooperation throughout the whole university community.

We are proud to see team-spirit, collegiality and collaboration between two of the most important AUBG Offices: Development and Admissions, which have been supporting each other for the last 28 years.

On October 21st, Admissions Office organized Specialty Coffee and Sweets bake sale dedicated to AUBG Science and Environmental Lab. Homemade biscuits, cakes, cupcakes and pancakes, different kinds of tea and coffee were available for all visitors and guests. As a result, the Admissions team raised the amount of $178 and donated it for the needs of science.

Thank you, dear colleagues, for being an agent of positive change on campus! We highly appreciate your involvement, support and dedication! Keep up the good work!

We couldn’t be happier! One dream just turned into a reality! AUBG starts the new academic year with a great achievement – the Major in Physics, which will undoubtedly significantly enhance the whole AUBG curriculum. It is an important block in the overall knowledge that a well-educated modern person is expected to possess because it develops important analytical, quantitative, deductive, and modeling skills.

One the one hand, students graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Physics will be well-prepared for a graduate study in physics and other STEM fields. On the other hand, they will be ready to assume various job positions requiring analytical, technical and problem-solving skills, as there has been a steady trend in the last decade towards increasing demand for highly qualified workforce with training in science and technology.

Thanks to our fundraising efforts for the Science Lab, we have secured most of the necessary fundamental equipment for performing laboratory exercises in the two general physics courses – Physics I and Physics II. More importantly, the new lab facility will allow for new practical experiences related to optics, holography, and quantum physics to be developed, when additional funds become available.

We are extremely grateful to all of our supporters and keep searching for funding to complete our state of the art laboratory to the benefit of our students.

WOW! We have an exciting news to share. For the first time in AUBG’s history a graduating class has decided to raise money and support an academic cause - the Science Lab! We are more than proud with our recent graduates from AUBG Class of 2019 who have collected and donated $958in support of the project:

“Over the past four years, we have had the amazing opportunity to see AUBG grow, develop and change just like we did. We are forever grateful to our Alma Mater for everything that it has given us, and we would like to demonstrate ourappreciationby making our first major gift to the University. We are proud that the money we have raised will be used in support of AUBG’s efforts to equip An Advanced Student Physics and Environmental Science Lab. “Vasilii, on behalf of the Senior Gift Commencement Committee

“We decided to invest everything that we have gathered for the creation of something that will allow students to conduct more hands-on experiments and thus have more practical rather than theoretical knowledge. This project is an important step towards the establishment of new major and minor in Physics with a serious potential to attract additional students to AUBG.” Polina, on behalf of the Senior Gift Commencement Committee

Thank you, Class of 2019 for your generosity! Thank you for setting such a good example and for leaving a legacy for the future AUBG generations!
