Despite its highest educational quality, the American University in Bulgaria (AUBG) does not have sufficient science content in its curriculum due to the lack of fundamental scientific infrastructure. The Science Lab will allow us to offer students majors in Science (physics) and Environmental studies, enable our faculty to conduct research and participate in collaborative academic projects, and promote science among the local community and nationally via workshops, lectures and demonstrations.
AUBG is the only accredited liberal-arts educational institution in Bulgaria and the Balkans. Despite increasing demand for natural sciences, we do not offer students science majors because of the lack of research, experimental and observational infrastructure. Faculty cannot perform basic research at site, nor can our institution participate in collaborative research among academic organizations. Thus AUBG cannot keep pace with today's dynamic technological world and its need for diverse talent
AUBG has allocated and renovated the space and furnished it with laboratory islands and a minimum set of laboratory equipment to create a basic Science Lab. The next step is to supply the new facility with advanced laboratory equipment for experiments, observation, measurements, data collection and testing in environmental science, physics, biology, quantum physics and optics. The lab will also feature high-tech interactive instructional equipment including smart board and node chairs.
Diversified courses and science majors to complement liberal arts curriculum; Basic research infrastructure for academic research and participation in collaborative projects; Collection and analysis of reliable environmental data for NGOs and public authorities; AUBG offers community at large access to library resources, computer lab, open-house events, etc. The Science Lab will hold workshops, lectures and presentations for local and national schools, science clubs and community organizations.
