This has been an exciting quarter for us. Your support has made all the difference.

Because of you, our Udaya project has been able to reach more than 70 adolescent boys and girls living with HIV. They are now eating healthier, more nutritious food, and they are able to regularly access the care and support services they need. Your generosity is giving them a chance for better lives!

We would like to share some stories of the young people we’ve reached with your support.

_____

Priyanka

HIV-positive since birth, Priyanka is a 12-year-old girl who lives with her grandmother, an agricultural labourer in the village of Guntur in Andhra Pradesh state. Although she has been receiving treatment since 2010, she is weak from her daily battle against the virus. Sadly due to financial constraints, Priyanka finds it difficult to get the medical care she needs. To make matters worse, she was recently asked to stop attending school when the school learned that she is living with HIV.

With your assistance, Priyanka is now back at school. She has been supported to visit the local Care & Support Centre (CSC). The counsellors at the CSC not only helped her get better, but they also reached out to the staff of her school to help them understand that there is no need to keep Priyanka out of school. She’s now, back at school, eating healthy food, and feels better than ever.

_____

Raju

Raju is a 15-year-old boy who lives with his elder brother and grandmother in Andhra Pradesh. Raju is also HIV positive. Poor financial conditions and lack of good nutrition coupled with the side effects of his antiretroviral treatment have had a severe impact on his health.

Thanks to your generous donations, Raju is now getting the extra care and nutritional support that he needs and is able to regularly visit his nearby CSC to access much needed services that are improving his overall wellbeing.

Thank you for supporting adolescents like Priyanka, Raju and many more. As you make your giving decisions this year, we hope you will renew your support so we can continue giving to these children and their families the services they need.

During the last quarter, the Udaya project focused on identifying adolescents living with HIV to improve access to HIV testing and treatment services and linkages to other services such as sexual and reproductive health (SRH). Leveraging the ongoing activities of Vihaan, India HIV/AIDS Alliance’s existing care and support program for people living with (PLHIV), a total of 469 adolescents in need of testing were identified in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. Parents, caregivers and grandparents were counselled and motivated on the importance of testing, and with family support, at-risk adolescents were referred for HIV testing.

The project is currently working in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra to finalize districts in each state with high burden of HIV adolescents to target for scale up of responsive services and linkages. The Alliance India team along with its state level partners are in the process of organizing skills building for adolescents living with HIV to increase their understanding of treatment adherence and other concerns relevant to young PLHIV. Peer volunteers will be identified to join the skills building process to provide support to other adolescents living with HIV, link them to appropriate services, and increase leadership and advocacy for comprehensive youth-friendly HIV and SRH services.
