Ukran Remeny Egyesulet (Ukrainian Hope Association) holds supplementary extracurricular programs for children aged 5 - 14 from Ukrainian refugee families that fled the war and now live in Budapest, Hungary. The subjects taught are Hungarian, English and Ukrainian, Art, Music, IT & Programming, and Preparation for Elementary School (in Ukrainian and Hungarian), and free snacks. We plan to publish trilingual children's books (in Ukrainian, English and Hungarian) titled 'The Beauty That Unites Us.'
According to a UNHCR report, many thousands of Ukrainian refugees have found safety in Hungary under diverse types of residence. They are facing many challenges, including language barriers, schooling hardships, accommodation problems, lack of finance to maintain reasonable living standards, socialization and adaptation problems which are especially relevant for schoolchildren, psychological issues related to dramatic life experiences, etc.
The project is to provide cognitive, cultural, moral, spiritual and emotional support for Ukrainian children aged 5 to 14 and their families to ensure their safe integration and seamless adaptation to the Hungarian community. To do so, we supplement compulsory school education with educational support and extracurricular activities, summer daily camps, and cultural activities aimed at cherishing Ukrainian language and traditions and becoming aware of Hungarian customs.
The project provides a network of support for 40 Ukrainian underage refugees in Budapest, connecting families to local resources, educational opportunities, and emotional support. The uninterrupted delivery of extracurricular education is key to mitigating the disruptions caused by relocation and preparing them for a smooth transition into Hungarian schools. The project's cross-community performances and festive activities, fosters greater empathy and solidarity within the local community.
