2020 was an unprecedented year and feels like is not over. For those in Venezuela already struggling with a complex humanitarian crisis, it was inconceivable to have an additional crisis as a result of Covid-19.

We believe this pandemic year has showed all how vulnerable we are all despite some sense of stability and confidence. For our local teams, like for many of those in Venezuela, 2020 showed them how resilient and fearless they were, in a the middle of a pandemic, to still ensure the education, nutrition and health of our children. Our admiration and gratitude for such devotion and heroic work that is also possible thanks to the support of hundreds of donors, both individual and organizationals, that contributed to the following results:

  • $680,627 were raised in Total Revenues, that is -5% compared to 2019 results but still a major difference from 2018 ($129,924), the very first full year of Friends’ activities
  • 8,979 children benefited from our program at the pediatric hospital in Valencia, a 25% decrease mainly forced by several lockdowns and reduced free movement among the population.
  • +300 health care workers were also benefited on a daily basis by Friends’ support, specially with PPE and critical medical supplies and equipment highly needed in a pandemic year.
  • ,A least 90% of all Covid-19 efforts and resources in 2020 to fight and prevent the pandemic at the Jorge Lizarraga Pediatric Hospital, did come from Friends.
  • 1,810 school-age children and teachers also benefited from our daily balance meal program, same as in 2019 and until schools were also forced to close and move to remote virtual education.
  • $439,017 were collected in Monetary Donations, a +90% compared to 2019 figure. This a major increase and similar to 2019, driven by several grants from individual donors, humanitarian aid organizations, charitable organizations such as 501(c)(3) non-profit foundations, and grant-making or umbrella organizations.
  • Grants increased by 91% and contributed with 92% of all monetary donations in 2020. Like in 2019, no monetary donation in 2020 was allocated to administration expenses but exclusively to the implementation of Friends’ programs.
  • Major levels of efficiency: 99 cents of every dollar Friends spent went directly to execute our programs and accomplish our mission.
  • $115,510 worth of In-kind Donations were collected, a -70% compared to 2019. This major drop is mainly explained by several, large drives and organizational's donations from 2019 that Friends was not able to replicate in 2020.
  • A total of 24 shipments from the USA to Venezuela in 2020 (mostly secure, door-to-door sea shipments), exactly the same number in 2019 (excluding 6 shipments from Europe in 2019).
  • A total of 1,647 cubic feet in shipments in 2020, this is 31% more in volume compared to the entire 2019 shipments or 34% more when compared to a 20’ sea container. Overall less shipments but on average, larger ones (in volume) in 2020.

Our work is far from over. We are all still fighting Covid-19 and a complex humanitarian crisis in Venezuela. We thank you very much for your support during 2020 and we hope we can continue joining forces in 2021.

Cordially, Paolo

PS. We will be releasing our 2020 Annual Report in the weeks to come. We look forward to sharing it with you!

When our lifes were disrupted by Covid-19, many lost their jobs and children stopped attending school, among many other effects and how things changed. This pandemic has also made us reflect on our daily life. In crisis, unfortunately, the most vulnerable are the ones suffering the most. Imagine now Venezuela, already sumerged in a complex humanitarian crisis by the time this pandemic hit.

Friends' ongoing programs in Venezuela continue responding to Covid-19 and adapting to the new context. Despite the challenges and missing opportunities, we are still standing by those underprivileged children and their families, and those health workers lacking all the conditions but fighting with all their heart.

OUR IMPACT:

  • 5,515 pediatric patients and 35,437 overall cases as reported (as of Aug) by the pediatric hospital that together we have been able to support daily, with baby and medical supplies, including medicines, vitamins, nutritional supplements, formulas, diapers, surgical material & equipment, PPE and so much more.
  • 1,810 school-age children & teachers, in 4 public schools, continued not only attending and remaining at school but also receiving a meal thanks to our daily nutritional meal program working in low-income areas. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, schools eventually closed and curfews were imposed forcing us to just work on a emergency plan.

RESULTS & INDICATORS

  • As of Nov 1, Total Revenues at 77% of 2019 Results due to a drop with in-kind donations as many major drives & organizational donations were canceled due to Covid-19.
  • Monetary Donations at +35% led by additional Grants (+47%) to respond to Covid-19 and implement IRC’s Programs. Digital & Individual donations also remain strong, at +19%.
  • Total Grants are representing 94% of all monetary donations (Note: Monetary Donations are NOT allocated to salaries or other administrative expenses). 35% of these Grants were for our Covid-19 Response Plan, 42% to implement IRC's Programs, and the remaining (together with digital & individual donations) allowed us to focus on our ongoing programs and their needs.
  • 2019 In-kind donations (54% of Total Revenues that year) were big enough to partially compensate a -71% drop in 2020.
  • 23 safe, door-to-door sea shipments from Miami to Venezuela for both of our programs, with medical and baby supplies, and most recently school supplies (for home schooling) as part of our Emergency Plan. Direct shipments from NY or Europe -as in the past- could not happen due to Covid-19.
  • Despite 6 less shipments from the US, Friends so far has shipped 1,541 cf, that is, +29% in volume compared to the entire 2019 and +32% compared to the full cubic capacity of a 20’ container. In sum, more volume or bigger shipments!
  • Nearly 60% of items so far shipped in units are Surgical & Medical. Although volume shipped dropped by -22%, the value is +287% due to highly- priced clinical items.
  • Except from Formulas at -6%, all other categories dropped by 56% on average, in units shipped so far.
  • Very large shipments (between Oct '19 and March '20) of diapers, underpads, vitamins, supplements and others gave our local teams a strong inventory to navigate during the pandemic and despite the -71% drop in in-kind donations experienced this year.

Since February, Friends took action to provide our teams and programs in Venezuela with all sort of cleaning, disinfecting and germicidal supplies, together with all the needed PPE. Thanks to grants from IRC (International Rescue Committee) and Anthony R. Abraham Foundation, our partnership with International Aid, and certainly the donations from many of you through GlobalGiving, we were able to implement and strengthen our Covid-19 Response Plan (see attached) by even adding 2 ventilators!

Today, in many countries, Covid-19 continues challenging health systems, disrupting economies, and certainly increasing the number of both new cases and deaths. In early June, Venezuela was reporting +50 new cases per day, with peaks of +100 cases, for a total of 2,087 cases and 20 deaths. Today, there are +10,000 cases, +300 new daily cases, new peaks of +400 cases per day, and at least 100 deaths. Yet rights groups claim real numbers are much higher than those reported.

As of June, Friends has provided with:

  • 41,900 disposable masks
  • 16,000 pairs of disposable gloves
  • 2,050 pairs of surgical & examination gloves
  • 4,110 sterile gowns
  • 1,180 N95 masks
  • 500 sterile overalls, and many more critical items...

As for our ongoing programs, Covid-19 prevented us from executing and replicating major drives that in 2019 brought us +$30K worth of donations, from diapers, to baby formulas, to nutritional supplements and more. Yet, we continued having the support of great partners such Victus' Clinical & Nutritional products, with critical items such as Enterex, pediatric & youth catheters, dressings, among many others; Chamos Foundation, with an additional donation of vitamins Alvityl Vitality for children +6 years old; Celebrating Childhood once again donated hundreds of Elephantitos' beautiful shoes and dresses for children, among other partners.

But once again, your contributions have made possible that thousands of health workers, little patients and their family members receive basic but highly needed supplies such as formulas, nutritional supplements, etc. Here other indicators as of June from Friends:

  • 10 shipments from Miami with donations & supplies, including 2 pallets of nutritional supplements and 1 pallets of baby formula.
  • Aprox. 807 cubic feet shipped, that is 75% of a 20' container.
  • +3,000 children taken care at the pediatric hospital.
  • +20,000 overall cases.

Friends will continue protecting his teams, patients, and hospital staff and even bringing hope in the middle of the humanitarian crisis and the breakdown of the health system that Venezuela is experiencing. We thank you for your continuing support with both our ongoing programs and our Covid-19 Response Plan.

Once again, thank you!

Paolo

In light of the global threat and response to coronavirus (COVID-19), we want to assure you we have taken the very first actions to protect our children, teams, and hospital staff in Venezuela. From our Director's visit in mid-February followed by several coordination meetings with the team in Miami, Friends quickly reacted to provide with the following:
  • Dozens of critical cleaning, disinfecting and germicidal supplies for the pediatric hospital.
  • 3,200 surgeon's gowns.
  • 2,600 surgical gloves.
  • 910 sterile surgeon gowns.
  • 500 sterile overalls.
  • 1,500 sterile gloves.
  • 240 units of N95 respirators/masks.
  • 8,000 pleated masks.
  • Gallons of antibacterial gel...
... and many other medical & surgical supplies to better respond to the Covid-19. This is just the first wave of more supplies to be received in the coming days, as we continue allocating more resources and ensuring timely delivery.

Regarding the always needed diapers, children's medicine, nutritional food and others, we had major shipments early in the year to ensure a larger coverage of nutritional supplements, formulas and different medicines. Thanks to Sortly, our real-time inventory system, we were also able to reinforce our inventory levels of diapers, baby wipes and other items that are also critical.

The Miami team is working remotely and in permanent communication and coordination with our teams in Venezuela to assess the needs and overall coronavirus situation. Venezuela is currently under a lockdown and our teams are determined to continue serving our children in the safest and healthiest ways possible.

Thank you, Paolo

Curious about how we finished 2019?

We just released our 2019 Annual Report which includes in great detail all the challenges, accomplishments, and overall financial and statistical results.

Of course, our greatest accomplishments are both the smiles you put on thousands of children and families under vulnerable, underprivileged conditions, and the lives we saved thanks to your continuos support.

Needless to say the positive impact on the doctors, caregivers and overall hospital staff at the Jorge Lizarrage Pediatric Hospital. Like our children, they know they can count on us to provide the best medical attention.

We still have so much to do, but together we can continue bringing hope, love and support to all those newborns, infants, school-age children, families, teachers, hospital staff and everyone under our programs.

Thank you once again for trusting on our work!
