With the new school year underway at JustWorld partner organization People Improvement Organization (PIO), there have been many exciting updates to report on. All students returned to in-person classes in January, and attendance has remained high, averaging more than 90% among primary and high school students. Research shows that children’s regular attendance may be the greatest factor influencing his or her success.

An online system for all teachers has been implemented to record student assessments, allowing teachers to monitor and evaluate school performance. Teachers report that the students are eager to make up for time and learning lost during the protracted closure of the school due to COVID-19 and have seen steady improvement in English and Math courses. Students are working remarkably hard, not just during class time, but during their study breaks and lunch as well.

To support student growth, the English teacher at PIO has been running remedial classes during the lunch breaks to help those who are having difficulty reading. Also, an online portal has been continuously updated with new apps that include best practices to support teaching lessons implemented in the classroom.

Volunteers have also been able to return to the school. Dental students at Puthisastra University have treated 115 students since January. All students who have not received dental treatment since 2019 will receive a dental check-up in the coming months. It is expected that 400 students will be treated thanks to the program.

Lastly, I am happy to share that for the first time since 2019, PIO was able to celebrate the Khmer New Year, the largest national holiday in Cambodia. It is a time for Cambodians to gather with their family, friends, and community. The entire PIO staff, students, and their families were thankful to come together to commemorate the special celebration.

These improvements and positive updates wouldn’t have been possible without you. Throughout the pandemic, your donations were vital in providing essential educational and nutritional support for children who had nowhere else to turn. With your continued help, students are now back in the classroom full time where they are once again being educated and given the tools they need to build a brighter future.

Thank you for joining us in making a difference in children’s lives.

Dear supporter,

Students at the JustWorld Cambodian partner organization, People Improvement Organization (PIO) have returned to school! Cambodian schools, due to COVID-19 protocols in the country, remained closed from January 25, 2021 until September 2021, when a phased approach of reopening began. The phased process was completed in December 2021 and the new school year began this month.

During the closures, the teachers and project leaders at PIO continued their efforts to mitigate the impact of school closures and address the needs of students and families in the community. It has always been a priority of the staff to keep their students engaged and on track academically. Teachers implemented online learning techniques and worked closely with high school students, as they prepared for Grade 9 and Grade 12 public examinations.  In November 2021, Grade 9 students took the Grade 9 public examination and 98% passed - a remarkable achievement.

PIO has recently developed and implemented its own online attendance system for monitoring student attendance and reporting to the ministry. The daily attendance rate is currently 92%, a reflection of how eager students are to be back at school. PIO has retained all of their most experienced teachers, demonstrating their dedication to the students and continued learning.

Supporters like you have allowed children the opportunity to continue their education and pursue their dreams, despite tremednous obstacles. As we begin the new year, we want to thank you for believing in the mission and making a difference.

Best wishes,

Dear supporter,

With all educational institutions in Cambodia closed, students at the JustWorld Cambodian partner organization, People Improvement Organization (PIO), have been required to learn remotely. PIO teachers and project leaders have continued their efforts to mitigate the impact of school closures and address the needs of students and families in the community. The staff has been working to ensure that students are practicing reading, writing, math and science skills daily. Using remote teaching techniques and available technology, such as Zoom and Telegram, it has been a priority of the staff to keep their students engaged and on track academically. Teachers have been working closely with high school students, as they prepare for Grade 9 and Grade 12 public examinations.

Social workers continue to conduct home visits to distribute rice and vital supplies. The on-site shelter provides a safe haven for 50 homeless students. Children are provided hot, nutritious meals and access to medical care every day. Without PIO, these children would have nowhere else to turn.

According to the health ministry's secretary of state, Cambodia has administered at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccines to 12.05 million people, or 75.3 percent of the country’s 16-million population. The World Health Organization has reported on the positive impacts of vaccinations with reductions in severe disease, hospitalizations, and deaths among those fully vaccinated.

With the high rates of vaccination, the Cambodian Prime Minister announced that schools could begin plans for reopening, starting in late September. The reopening is a phased process, and will be subject to a range of safety measures. PIO has submitted a comprehensive plan and was visited by officials from the Ministries of Health and Education, Youth and Sport to evaluate safety procedures in the school. Once PIO receives approval to reopen, students who are fully vaccinated in Grades 7-12 will be able to return to in-person lessons. The next phases will be the return of Grades 3-6 students, followed by Grades K-2

The ongoing pandemic has revealed the strength, determination, and power when we work together. When families were forced into extreme lockdown measures, we were there to ensure that no child was left behind. Supporters like you have allowed children the opportunity to learn and grow in the safety of their own homes. With students still remaining at home, we must continue to raise vital funding to give children the hope for a brighter tomorrow.

Dear supporter,

In Cambodia, a spike in cases has led the Cambodian government to mandate an extreme lockdown since April. In “red zone” areas, people aren’t allowed to leave their homes, not even for food. Some families have been given small servings of rice and canned fish - hardly enough to feed one person. Many citizens employed by tourism and export-driven jobs are unsure when they will be able to return to work. Families are struggling to meet the basic needs of their children.

With nowhere else to turn, the students served by JustWorld at People Improvement Organization (PIO) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia are receiving essential resources. Children living at PIO are provided hot, nutritious meals and access to medical care every single day. All staff and students over the age of 18 have received two doses of vaccinations - a major health victory in the fight against the virus.

Teachers and project leaders are also being housed at the school, allowing them to continue their efforts to mitigate the impact of school closures and address the needs of students and families in the community. The staff has been working to ensure students are practicing reading, writing, math and science skills every day at home, using remote teaching techniques and available technology and preparing online curriculum, lesson plans and videos to keep their students engaged academically.

Thanks to supporters like you, children are given resources they would otherwise not have access to and a hope for a brighter future. We must continue to raise vital funding to sustain the JustWorld programs that help to guarantee that no child is left behind. Please consider donating at: www.justworldinternational.org

Thank you.

Dear supporter,

Education is the most empowering force in the world. Education for children is the key to opening doors to a better life. When we reduce barriers to education, children are able to thrive. It’s not only about knowledge and numbers, access to education reduces a child’s involvement with gangs, drugs, and child labor and lowers the amount of teen pregnancies. Education leads to healthier childhoods and, ultimately, to higher education and greater economic opportunities. Nearly 60 million people could escape poverty if all adults had just two more years of schooling, and 420 million people could be lifted out of poverty if all adults completed secondary education, according to UNESCO.

Educators and students around the world have felt the extraordinary ripple effect of the pandemic as schools have had to shut down or enact strict health and safety restrictions. UNESCO data reports that 24 million students are at risk of not returning to school, dramatically exacerbating learning inequalities across the globe and threatening a loss of learning that may stretch beyond one generation of students.

JustWorld has been committed to empowering children through this global health crisis. Thanks to supporters like you, education has not stopped for the children served by the JustWorld Cambodian project, People Improvement Organization (PIO), located in Phnom Penh in Cambodia. Not only was PIO forced to shut down from March-September, but many of the families served by the programs faced job losses due to a lack of tourists and reduced demand for exports. Families struggle to meet the basic needs of their children.

JustWorld project leaders have been supported in their outreach efforts to sustain students and families nutritionally and develop alternative teaching techniques, such as an effective online e-learning program and small group community based lessons, to prevent learning gaps during school closures and to keep students on course. PIO school administrators and social workers also were in contact with students to gradually get them back to school.

The academic year fully resumed in November. Grade 9 took their public examination, where pass rates are expected to exceed the 92% pass rate of the previous year. Grade 12 students also took their high school exit exam in late December. Grade 8 - 12 students are preparing for their annual book report competition, an event in which students work in teams of 4 to make presentations in English on a book or article they have read. Moreover, children are receiving hot, nutritious meals and access to medical care every single day.

As we continue to deal with the repercussions of COVID-19, JustWorld needs support now more than ever. Although the future is uncertain, children continue to rely on the services that JustWorld provides. We must continue to raise vital funding to sustain the JustWorld educational programs that ensure that no child is left behind. Please consider donating at: www.justworldinternational.org

Thank you.
