Keeping Students On Track

Dear supporter,

We hope you and your family are safe and healthy during this time. Like you, we've been watching with concern about how best to respond to the rapidly changing needs of our world.

A global health pandemic like COVID-19 has proven devastating to already impoverished communities like Phnom Penh in Cambodia, a country where real poverty exists. Families have to grapple with losing their only source of income, with factories and other job sites shutting down. Families also have to navigate extreme lockdown measures and severe supply shortages. Many are left with nowhere to turn.

With PIO currently closed, your support is now directly helping to alleviate challenges, added pressures and obstacles facing teachers, students, caregivers and parents living in these dire circumstances. Thanks to you, JustWorld is continuing to fund teacher salaries and essential components of the education and nutrition programs.

The teachers at PIO have been busy working to develop new teaching techniques, adapting to utilize available technology, extending additional support for parents, and preparing online curriculum, lesson plans and videos to keep their students on course. These teachers are heroes in the community, working diligently to not only address students' essential needs, but ensure that they continue to learn and grow. Students are able to take their public examinations online, keeping them on track academically. Social workers are continuing to make home visits, distributing rice and supplies to the families with the greatest needs. For families who have no jobs, no source of income or economic support, the meals and supplies they are receiving have become critical resources for their survival during the shut down.

No doubt, this is surely a time of uncertainty for us all, but this is also a time for hope and generosity, and for us all to rally around the world’s youth. Now more than ever, your help is needed. Grateful for Your Support

Dear Friends,

The past few months have marked the start of a new year, a new decade, and for many, the start of a new school year. Students at PIO finished their studies last year strong (Grade 6 pass rate was 96% and Grade 9 a perfect 100%!) and motivated to stay in school and continue learning this school year. As a recent visitor from JustWorld noted, "In Cambodia, only the lucky kids are able to go to school...these kids knew this was their only way out of poverty. They knew that they were lucky and had more drive than I have ever seen in any kid I know."

You have supported 650 children to receive an education through qualified teachers, the purchase of books, and nutritious lunches (30,700!). Students have reported knowing the importance of being able to attend PIO school and having lunch available to those in need. We are excited to continue helping PIO, with your love and support, so that these students can get the education they need to succeed.

"My family brought me to PIO because my mother could not support me to studey at public school. I want to stay at PIO school...(I) have two years left. I will finish grade 12 successfully and I strongly believe that teachers of PIO will help my reach my goal." - Sreynoch,

"My family enroll(ed) me at PIO because my family is poor, and there was (no) money to support education. I really look forward to continuing in the education [prograp] at PIO school because the school really cares about the student's learning. I know my teachers have a lot of experience in teaching. "My family enrolled me at PIO because when I learned at public school [in the] province, my mother said that my knowledge was ppor and my mother was not able to support my studies. Fall Report from PIO

Good morning!

We would like to share this report with you that covers the period 1 June – 30 September 2019. It is the 3^rd quarter of the 2018 / 2019 school year for the JustWorld-funded school, PIO, in Stung Meanchey, Cambodia.

Did you know?

The Cambodian education system is actually quite young- after the Khmer Rouge, which ended in 1979, it started being rebuilt after losing a generation of educators and professionals.

Today

The average number of years of schooling a student receives is 5.4. While the enrolment rate for primary school is high (97%), only 48% of students complete secondary education.

How Your Support is Helping

Each month PIO assesses its students in all subjects and uses those results when reporting to the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport. The pass rates for this quarter are very similar to those for previous years. Overall, the pass rate in the national curriculum subjects is 79%. 95% of Grade 6 students passed the recent public examination for admission to high school. The top student at PIO scored an average of 95% in the 6 subjects that were examined – a wonderful achievement.

Additionally, PIO developed a science room where students can conduct experiments. In Cambodia public schools and NGOs do not have specialist science rooms rarely have the opportunity to conduct experiments. By starting this project PIO hopes that students will benefit by being able to experience science and not just read about it in their textbooks.

PIO held English Speech competitions for students from Grade 2 to Grade 9and math competitions for Grade 2 to Grade 10. All winners received certificates and the winners of the senior speech competitions received bicycles and the winning team won a trip to the National Museum.

It has been a very positive end to the school year. We the celebrated students' success and after a short break are all looking forward to the new school year beginning in October.
