This project will provide baby formula and follow-up for 75 high risk babies who have been abandoned after birth or their mother has died in childbirth and the extended family is in need of support in order to keep the baby within the family.
Due to the conflict of the past 2 years we are confronted with many problems. 1) A big problem is that the health care system has not been fully restored yet and this results in women dying in child birth, leaving a family to support a new born baby while prices have escalated and baby formula is not available or unaffordable. 2)There are many unwanted pregnancies as a result of the war, leaving many women in distress, abandoning or killing the baby after birth.
1) AO wants to assist the families where a mother has died in child birth, we support them with baby formula and follow-up till the baby is 1 year old. 2) AO has a presence in the local hospital to try to prevent child abandonment and killings. Where possible we will counsel the pregnant mother, refer to appropriate service and look for solutions for her to keep the baby. Where this is not possible we will accept the baby into our residential care, hence the need for baby formula.
The problem in itself is not new but the current increase in the number of cases is a result of the conflict. We expect to see a peek in cases till about August/September. The long-term impact of the project is: 1) that babies will be able to grow up in their families without health and development implications due to malnutrition. 2) The abandoned babies will grown up in a loving and caring environment where they can thrive, while we continue to look for family solutions.
