Auroville - Empower a regenerative Future

Its summer,

its well above 38C in the shade of trees at lunchtime, and it hasnt rained since January. Big trees start to dry up from their branches. Besides a few showers during thunderstorms these days, the summer monsoon begins only at end of July - or already in June like last 4 years?

What about our water? or better: What about the water for everyone in the region?

Water conservation landscaping

Water conservation goes hand in hand with land regeneration - even more so in tropical climate with great annual rainfall variations. Aurovilles pioneers undertook extensive water conservation work since the 70s with wasteland regeneration funding: Contour bunds, perculation ponds, dams in the ravine`s and of course afforestation of the TDEF, Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest. 

Today its a near ZERO Runoff, even in extremely heavy rainfall. However, the expertise in collecting water for agriculture and domestic use lies with Tamil Nadu`s traditional wisdom. Only by effectively  collecting rain water, and distributing it among the villages and farmers, Tamil Nadu could prosper for hundreds of years. Today, Tamil Nadus groundwater reserves are depleting rapidly, and some of its coastal area suffer from saltwater intrusion .

We have many projects to take forward, from undertaking landscaping for water conservation on newly purchased land, to increase water perculation in Auroville`s fragile watershed, but even  a regional water conservation project: involving many panchayats in the Villupuram district to revive or strengthen the existing network of ponds and tanks.
