Before the Elderly Project began, many older community members in Rubuguri, Uganda, felt forgotten and hopeless. Their suffering went beyond their physical needs, which were not being met, and extended into the emotional realm: they had no dignity and were exceedingly lonely. After seeing this suffering, The Angel Projects knew we needed to step in, not only to enhance their quality of life but also to build relationships with them and to show them that they are loved and treasured.
The change has been astonishing! The Angel Projects provides the elderly with in-home care, bringing them nutritious food and household supplies. We also provide them with basic hygiene and healthcare as well as companionship and deep relational bonds. The members of the Elderly Project are now thriving both physically and emotionally; they feel seen, heard, valued, cared for, and loved. They are so thankful and happy; their broad smiles say it all! We feel so fortunate to bring these people dignity and hope in their final years, and as a staff we've benefitted so much from our relationships with them as well!
The Elderly Project is also about building bonds between generations and teaching the younger community members to remember and care for their elders. Our students get involved in the work done in our greenhouse, providing much needed vegetables for the elderly. Some of them have also learned first-aid and basic healthcare in order to evaluate the medical needs of the older members of the community. Our hope is that this type of training will have a lasting impact and that more care will be given to these "unseen" members of the community. We want to shine a light on them and help them to thrive!
Thank you so much to our donors who make our work with the Elderly Project possible. Your help goes beyond providing food, supplies, and healthcare -- you are helping people to live with dignity, independence, and hope.
