Alfredo is the youngest child currently living in one of our foster homes. His family affectionately calls him “Pulguita,” or “Little Flea,” a nickname that perfectly reflects his small size and the enormous energy he brings into their lives. One of his favorite things in the world is Mr. Potato Head from Toy Story, and his joy and curiosity have become a source of happiness for everyone around him.
But Alfredo is much more than the youngest member of his foster family. He has become a powerful motivation for his parents to keep moving forward and transforming their lives.
Through the support provided by La Casa de la Sal, Alfredo’s family receives guidance and accompaniment as they navigate the challenges of caring for a child living with HIV. The foster home is not simply a place where Alfredo receives care; it is a safe environment where he can grow, develop, play, learn, and build meaningful bonds with the people who care for him.
His parents often describe him as their “little engine”—the small person who motivates them to continue, to learn, and to create a better future for their family.
Every smile, every new word, every game with Mr. Potato Head, and every small achievement reminds them of what they are working toward. Alfredo has helped transform their perspective: instead of seeing only the challenges ahead, they are increasingly able to see the possibilities.
His story reminds us that the impact of a foster home extends far beyond providing a safe place to live. When children are surrounded by care, stability, and opportunities to thrive, they can also inspire profound changes in the adults who accompany them.
Alfredo may be the smallest child in his home, but his presence has become one of its greatest sources of strength.
With your support, stories like Alfredo’s are possible. Together, we can continue creating safe and loving environments where children living with HIV can grow with dignity, affection, and hope.
