A Place to Belong: Children in Families

By Patricia Estefania Lucano Hernandez | Fundarasing Coordinator

Dear Donnor

During this reporting period, our project continued to provide comprehensive protection and care services to children and adolescents (ages 0–17) living with HIV who are in situations of abandonment or social risk. Through an integrated model that includes healthcare monitoring, education, nutrition, and psychosocial support, we work to ensure their overall wellbeing and long-term development.

A major milestone in this period has been the consolidation of our family-based care model. Children who were previously living in institutional settings are now growing up in foster families, where they receive individualized attention, emotional support, and a stable environment that promotes healthy development. This transition has resulted in visible improvements in their emotional security, social skills, and quality of life.

Our multidisciplinary team continues to provide close accompaniment to both children and foster families, ensuring safe and nurturing environments through regular monitoring, psychological support, and guidance. This ongoing support is key to sustaining the success of family-based care and addressing any challenges that may arise.

At the same time, we continue supporting our first generation of children—now young adults—through our transitional housing program. In these spaces, they are accompanied as they pursue their education, develop life skills, and prepare for independent living with the support of specialists in psychology and social work.

Through these combined efforts, we are not only protecting children in the present, but also building pathways for them to become independent, empowered adults capable of overcoming stigma and creating better opportunities for their future.
