We have now been working on rural South Africa, since 2021. Not only do we work with domestic animals, such as dogs and donkeys but we have also been working with wildlife. Not just in Selwane, but also the surrounding areas.
Just last week we had a call from a worried community member about a vervet monkey that had some blood on its side. As she was quite young and weak she was able to be captured. After sedation and radiographs we were able to see that she had been shot with a pellet gun. This pellet had embedded itself in the nerves of the front armpit and affected the movement of the arm. Due to the precarious position of the pellet, the decision was made to leave it in place. This young female should regain use of her arm and is now in the care of Vervet Monkey Foundation, where she will be rehabilitated and released in the future.
Unfortunately this is such a common problem here and in many places. Monkeys are seen as pests. As we live and work right next to national parks and reserves, it is inevitable to have human wildlife comflict such as this.
A few members of ARRC have a lot of experience with primates and we offer help to all types of animals when they present. We hope to help mitigate and reduce situations such as these by allowing people to contact us if they have a wildlife conflict occurring, before they take matters into their own hands.
This month, along with this poor monkeys treated, this fund helped to fix 3 broken legs, sterilise and castrate dogs from the community, stitch up some donkey wounds and provide emergency veterinary care to the animals of Selwane and the surrounding communities.
Thank you once again, from all of us here at ARRC. Your donation means a lot and makes a big difference!
