We have been working in the rural community of Selwane, Limpopo South Africa since 2021, offering free veterinary care to a community that has no access to it. The animals we treat include dogs, working donkeys, cows, goats, pigs, birds and wildlife. This fund will help to cover much needed sterilization's, treatment for Transmissible Venereal Tumours (venereal cancer) in dogs, emergency treatments, wounds and injuries and essential preventatives such as vaccinations and parasite control.
The problem is that the community of Selwane has no easy access to veterinary care. This had led to many issues, including, the overpopulation of dogs, rabies cases, the misuse of working donkeys and very low standards of animal welfare in general. Although we have been working in the community since 2021, there is a dire need for continued veterinary intervention and education.
Offering free veterinary care to the animals of Selwane, is a never-ending job, but one where we see firsthand how the animals (and people) are positively impacted. We hope that by offering free veterinary care and education, that we can slowly decrease the issues we see in the communities. By raising animal welfare standards and providing preventative measure through things such as vaccinations and sterilizations, the impact will be a long term and positive.
The project will make a positive impact on both the animals and people of Selwane. Offering veterinary care, where there is little to none will allow us to have an impact on both the animal and human population. Through sterilization's, we will decrease unwanted pets, by vaccinating against rabies we are contributing to the global effort to reduce rabies worldwide and by treating working donkeys, we ensure they can have a good standard of living, whilst also being able to help their humans.
