Damaged house
Damaged house

A devastating 7.9 magnitude earthquake on 25th April in Nepal claimed life of above 7,800 people and directly affected above 8 million people. Due to the destruction of houses in rural as well as in urban areas, people are forced to refuge in an open space. There is urgent need to provide basic needs (treated drinking water, food, medicine, tent, etc.).

ECCA has mobilized youth volunteers in the community to provide immediate relief materials. Coordination is also being done with Nepal government, other civil society organizations, NGOs and international agencies.

A separate project has been created in the Global Giving Support Nepal Earthquake Relief

Initially, your donation will help to meet the survivors' immediate needs for food, fuel, clean water, hygiene products, and shelter. Once initial relief work is complete, your support will be used to support longer-term recovery efforts.

Some of the relief activities carried out by ECCA are:

  • ECCA started production of chlorine solution (branded as WATASOL) from the very next day of earthquake. WATASOL production is being done by using all the available WATA devices, as per the technology developed by Antenna Technologies Switzerland. ECCA is distributing WATASOL in bottles of 60ml and 1 liter. WATASOL is tested for quality before distribution. Many volunteers came forward to support in the bottling and packaging of WATASOL. WATASOL has been supplied for use at the hospitals as well.
  • Water filters embedded with silver colloidal treated tulip filter candles have been distributed, which can filter murky water to remove impurities.
  • Self Help kits were distributed that contained helmets, wheel barrows, shovels, ropes and other tools essential to dismantle and manage the damaged houses.
  • Tents were provided to the needed families.
  • Medical camp has been set-up to provide treatment to the injured
  • Food package has been distributed
  • Solar light has been provided

 The relief works are continuing.

Thank you for the support you have been providing. Your generous donations are extremely valued.

We look forward towards getting your continued support, at this time of natural disaster.

Students Expressing their Gratitude.
Students Expressing their Gratitude.

“I felt a lot of difference in our living condition without light and with light, especially during evening hours and dark night. Our economy is based in barter system of commodities that we have, due to which we do not have enough money to purchase and install light in our houses. Hence, all the houses in our community do not have light. But, now after using Solar Tuki, it really changed our life and way of living in our community. I also feel good that our children also regularly do their homework in evening hours and their study is in progress.” – Ms. Kamala (farmer & housewife of Syamrang village, Chitwan).

Chepang community, living in Symarang and Sarling village of Chitwan District, are among deprived community from development. They have very low level of education and requires various activities to empower and educate them. People in this community, still today do not have any source of clean lighting option during evening hours. Hence, ECCA in coordination with Unica Foundation, distributed 55 and 85 sets of solar tuki in Sarling and Symarang village. Along with the distribution of Solar Tuki, repair and maintenance; children training camp; youth training camp were also organized to aware the community and make themselves trained to maintain solar lights.

Balpa (student) shared that because of solar lights, it is so easy to read and complete homework at night also. Before he and his friends used to get scolded by their teachers as they were not being able to complete their home work.

The principal of Dhrungbang Primary School shared his words towards us is before it is always a huge problem to take a sick person to hospital at night because of light but now the role can played by the provided solar lights. The solar tuki maintenance training helps them to solve if any problems occur in solar lights.

Solar Tuki is bringing change in lifestyle of Chepang community. It is made possible due to your help and support. Thank you for your help and support. Please share the news in your network so that together we can bring greater impact in our community. Do support us through visiting our Facebook Page, Twitter, Blog and Youtube Channel along with our website.

Thanks & Regards,

Angel Chitrakar

School girls with 'tuki' on their way.
School girls with 'tuki' on their way.

Technological advances has the human race reaching new heights. There’s nothing that we don’t know of. Developments in the sector of technology, banking, fashion and ideas are changing the way we live. We want it all, and we want it more. Like our developments, there is no limit to what we want.

Far away from all of this in the Glauthok and Wakran villages in Chitwan where road, electricity and health posts haven’t yet found its way, residents are living an almost nomadic life. Comparatively. Small traditional houses, maximum of two stories, minuscule windows that barely let the light pass in the room, and an attached animal shed. Here, animals are as important as your meals as they are the only source of income of some families. When ECCA went there for its ‘Light For All’ Campaign, staffs were appalled at the situation. No one had attempted to spare a glance outside the window into the infinite opportunities.

One of the main enemies of development is illiteracy. To fight this problem, government has established a fair number of schools in the area. Its accessibility is another story, but students venture to walk even a couple of hours to go to their schools and be educated. By the end of the day, the students would be exhausted and for the effort they put, no good result is harvested. There is no light at night to study with. Parents, too, hesitate sending an extra pair of hands to two-hour worth of exhausting walk away to get education that will not be useful. So what could’ve been done?

The objective of distributing solar ‘tuki’ in this area was not to bring drastic changes. This was to merely fuel the fire that the residents had in them. As per the strategy, students were given a solar ‘tuki’, stationing the mass charging device in the school. So students, obliged by the ‘tuki’ and their studies, would attend the school. This is not the first place this idea was implemented. But the results were heartwarming. Then, tattered clothes and lack of facilities barely mattered. Light a match, light the kindle – the residents of this forlorn place only needed someone to tell them that they can do it. It’s only a matter of time, before they will accomplish what had seemed impossible.

Your support means a lot to these people. Wakran and Glauthok aren’t the first place where our project has brought hope to, neither will it be the last. And please, let us not stop here. We express our sincere gratitude for your help and look forward to your suggestions regarding our works.
