Promoting organic farming in Ghana

By Marleen Nelisse | Safisana Foundation Lead

Smallholder farmers remain at the heart of Safisana’s circular economy model. By transforming organic and fecal waste into high-quality organic fertilizer, Safisana helps farmers improve soil health, increase crop yields and build more resilient farming systems.

In 2025, 11,945 smallholder farmers benefited from the use of Safisana’s organic fertilizer, Asase Gyefo. The fertilizer is produced at Safisana’s waste-to-resource facility in Ashaiman, where organic waste collected from urban areas is safely processed and converted into valuable agricultural inputs.

Farmers using the fertilizer reported significant improvements in soil quality and crop performance. Field demonstrations and farmer training sessions helped participants understand the best application techniques and the benefits of organic soil management. In a survey conducted with participating farmers, 98% reported satisfaction with the fertilizer and indicated they would recommend it to other farmers.

Many farmers also observed healthier crops, improved soil moisture retention and stronger plant growth compared to conventional practices. By restoring soil fertility and reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers, the project supports more sustainable agricultural production while lowering farming costs.

Beyond increasing productivity, the initiative also strengthens local livelihoods and food security. Safisana continues to expand partnerships with agricultural organizations and farmer groups to ensure that more smallholder farmers can benefit from sustainable organic fertilizer and climate-smart farming practices.

With continued donor support, Safisana aims to reach even more farmers across Ghana and further strengthen sustainable agriculture in rural communities.
