Introduction:
Many children are facing problem to complete their schooling after 18 years. It is also difficult for them for self sustained. It is mandatory for children to leave the child care institution after the age 18 and they aren’t prepare to stand on their feet. So, Aftercare is a provision for children after they have reached the age of 18 years, and are discharge from Children’s Homes/Special Homes or from Child Care Institutions (CCIs).
YCDA started this Aftercare programme with aspiration of empower young adults to face positively the challenges of life after leaving Institutional care This aftercare programme enables children to well equip to the society and stand on their feet. We teach them life skill education frequently, teaching them the adult responsibilities. We also facilitate for their higher education or skill development training and link them to their job opportunities.
Counseling and Life skill Education at Group Living Home
Counseling and life skill education is very important to help young adults to cope with challenges that they face in their day to day life. Counselling is given young adults regularly with the support of District child Protection Unit (DCPU) to improve the skills in confidence building and bright career towards their life. This stage is very challenging for this adolescents group. In this stage, it is quite difficult to take the right decision for their career and to communicate with the elders in proper way. These situations lead to stress and anger issue. Though this life skills session young adults are more mature to learn better ways to communicate with mentors, adults and peers. They build their skill in developing their self esteem, and learn to take responsibilities for their next steps. These skills help them to take the right decision in a right way.Regular joint monitoring is going on to aftercare group with support of District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), Child welfare Committee (CWC).
New Journey Begins.....
Sulochana 18 yr is a young adult is from khurdha district. She was admitted into one Child Care Institution (CCI) in PUSH in Bhubaneswar of Khurdha district. She is very jolly, smart and active girl. She was very interested to build her career in hotel management. After completed her higher secondary, she came to aftercare group living home in order of Child Welfare Committee (CWC) as she completed 18yr. she is enthusiastic to learn things quickly.
She learned many things to manage to herself and with her friends through counseling session. She got training on life skills and comprehensive sexual health education. After training she came to know how to overcome the challenges and manage effectively in everyday life. As she was keen interested to do a course, after career counseling and interest mapping, she has enrolled in diploma course in hotel management at DDU-GKY. This course will be helped her to stand on her own feet and become a self sufficient. Now she is performing well and will do a bright career in hotel management.
