Motivational camp and Career Counselling for Children

At the age of 18, young adult aren’t fully equipped to handle their life by themselves. They need guidance and support to lead their life. This Aftercare programme connection the gap helps them to take the responsibility in young adult stage. Before 18 years preparation of children is the most important to lead a brighter career. This programme also empowers them to complete their education, stand on their feet and successfully living an independent life.

Education is very important for all the children youth. Education is a weapon to improve young adults life. It is also the most important tool to change one’s life.  Children who receive technical education, they meet their appropriate education milestones. The important of technical education is the overall development of children in relation to preparation of children to higher study and vocational training in their future. It empowers them to promotes their independence in both social and economic life.

It’s a big challenge for children living in Child Care Institution to get a good job particularly with their career aspiration and personal interest. So they require guidance from mentors or seniors in that stage to know about their own personal interests, abilities and what to be as per their career in future. They have lack of knowledge about the work-related needs and opportunities around them.

It is important to be mentor or guidance to their career path particular during their transition from institutional life to independent life or from job insecurity to continued education.

Above all, Education is extremely important for employment. It certainly is a great opportunity to make a decent living.

Basing on the above requirement, YCDA in collaboration with Child Welfare Committee and District Child Protection Unit conducted motivational camp and career counseling in Odisha for children from different Child Care Institution (CCI). In this programme children age group 16-18 from CCIs, Govt. personnel, representatives  from Odisha Livelihood Mission, ORMAS were participated in that programme.  The main objective of the programme was counseling and motivating children of the CCIs for their family reintegration and family reunification, Motivate children of the age group of 16+ living in the CCIs to choose their appropriate career after leaving the child care institution and also orient them towards their vocational and technical education for their self sustainability.

Through the some games and group discussion the career mapping was conducted and children did their goal setting. The technical person emphasizes the importance of vocational education in current days. He thoroughly explained the eligibility criteria and the trades are available in Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDUGKY), Govt. of India . He also said about the placement opportunity of vocational education and the placement opportunity and the stipend facility. The technical person also shared about the scope and path of placement opportunity in technical education for CCI children. So before leaving institutional care the children should take their own stand and make proper career plan.

The important is career developmental tasks for adolescents are to know their interests, capacities, values and acquire knowledge about work to decide upon realistic educational and career pathways. When making career-related decisions, children/adolescents also need to adopt positive career attitudes and behaviors and base their decisions on career-relevant knowledge and skills.The group exercise was exited to the children for career mapping and to make their self assessment and self reflection.

The children also got some exposure to the different technical institutes where the children got information regarding the vocational training which can meet their immediate livelihood. The children identified their difficulties and challenges to choose their career point. Children were excited while they involve in the total process of the programme.  YCDA as the promoting institute committed to support to the children till they get self independent.

Introduction:

Many children are facing problem to complete their schooling after 18 years. It is also difficult for them for self sustained. It is mandatory for children to leave the child care institution after the age 18 and they aren’t prepare to stand on their feet. So, Aftercare is a provision for children after they have reached the age of 18 years, and are discharge from Children’s Homes/Special Homes or from Child Care Institutions (CCIs).

YCDA started this Aftercare programme with aspiration of empower young adults to face positively the challenges of life after leaving Institutional care This aftercare programme enables children to well equip to the society and stand on their feet. We teach them life skill education frequently, teaching them the adult responsibilities. We also facilitate for their higher education or skill development training and link them to their job opportunities.

Counseling and Life skill Education at Group Living Home

Counseling and life skill education is very important to help young adults to cope with challenges that they face in their day to day life. Counselling is given young adults regularly with the support of District child Protection Unit (DCPU) to improve the skills in confidence building and bright career towards their life. This stage is very challenging  for this adolescents group. In this stage, it is quite difficult to take the right decision for their career and to communicate with the elders in proper way. These situations lead to stress and anger issue. Though this life skills session young adults are more mature to learn better ways to communicate with mentors, adults and peers. They build their skill in developing their self esteem, and learn to take responsibilities for their next steps. These skills help them to take the right decision in a right way.Regular joint monitoring is going on to aftercare group with support of District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), Child welfare Committee (CWC).

New Journey Begins.....

Sulochana 18 yr is a young adult is from khurdha district. She was admitted into one Child Care Institution (CCI) in PUSH in Bhubaneswar of Khurdha district. She is very jolly, smart and active girl. She was very interested to build her career in hotel management. After completed her higher secondary, she came to aftercare group living home in order of Child Welfare Committee (CWC) as she completed 18yr. she is enthusiastic to learn things quickly.

She learned many things to manage to herself and with her friends through counseling session. She got training on life skills and comprehensive sexual health education. After training she came to know how to overcome the challenges and manage effectively in everyday life. As she was keen interested to do a course, after career counseling and interest mapping, she has enrolled in diploma course in hotel management at DDU-GKY. This course will be helped her to stand on her own feet and become a self sufficient. Now she is performing well and will do a bright career in hotel management.

Introduction:

After Care programme is for children without family or who leave institutional care after they complete 18 years of age to sustain themselves during the transition from institutional to independent life. This aftercare programme enables children to adjust to the society and stand on their feet. In Child Care Institution (CCI) children are vulnerable to unemployment, psychological stress, physical and mental illness, homelessness and dependency level is high. Base on this, Section 46 of JJ Act 2015 stated that any child leaving the child care institution may be provided aftercare support till the age of 21 years with the order of Child Welfare Committee (CWC).

Process of Aftercare programme (Re-integration to community)

  • Mapping of Identify children(14-17years-pre aftercare category & above 18 years)
  • Prepare Individual Career Plan
  • Counselling of Individual children
  • Life skill education, Comprehensive Sexuality education and Exposure visit
  • Produce Child before CWC
  • Agreement with the child/Young adult on care & support
  • Action (Education, accommodation, safety security)
  • Vocational Training and  Placement Support
  • Linkage with schemes/sponsorships and entrepreneurship

 

During this period the following activities were taken:

Counseling to children at Group Living Home:Counseling is provided to children in group living home. It is a regular basis to improve the skill of decision making, reduce stress, confidence building, and positive thinking and optimistic towards life.

Life Skill Education: Life skill education is given to all children to enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of their everyday life. It focuses on money management, communication, decision making, coping management etc. it is easy for young adults to take adult responsibilities 

Comprehensive Sexuality education: The comprehensive sexuality education has been provided to the young adults to aware about their health rights. We also give education on the role of gender and their identities, information on sexual anatomy and physiology, on how sexuality is related to wellbeing.  This sexuality education provides young adults on the knowledge, skills, and ethics in their grownup stage.

 

Monitoring

Monitoring is very important for children in that stage. The joint monitoring team DCPU (District Child Protection Unit), CWC and YCDA has done in a periodic basis to after care children. During the monitoring there needs to look into the psychological needs of the children and recommendation for the counseling. YCDA does it very technically taking the support from the experts and higher the professional exports 

Motivational camps and career counseling for the young adults living in the child care institution

Taking 46 young adults age group f 16 6o 18 a motivational camp cum career counseling and career planning session has been taken by YCDA. Different age group children participated from different CCIs of Bolangir district.The objective of the programme was to motivate the children to chose their career soon after leaving thechild care institution and children age group fo 16 to 17 years should start their career opportunity for which they can stand by themselves.

Through the games and group discussion the career mapping was conducted and children did their goal setting, the exercise was exited to the children for career mapping and to make their self assessment and self reflection. The children also got exposure to the different technical institutes where the children gt information regarding the vocational training which can meet their immediate livelihood. The children identified their difficulties and challenges to choose their career point. YCDA as the promoting institute also committed to support to the children till they get self independent 

 Linkage young adults in different skill building institute

In this period 6numbers of young adults have been linked with different skill based training institutes in different trade. All 6numbers of young adults got their placement in different company in different parts of India. Now they are getting salary of Rs 12000 per month and living their independent life happily. This also brings positive changes and smile days among children.

Introduction:

According to the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, Aftercare is the provision of care for children who have completed 18 years may be referred to as “young adults”. It helps and prepares the children to be self-independent .Section 46 of JJ Act 2015 stated that any child leaving the child care institution may be provided aftercare support till the age of 21 years on the order of CWC. Based on their career plan the higher education or skill building training will be provided though the employable skill and placement. In case the child’s own family is unable to take care then the child should be provided the appropriate and adequate care protection and community rehabilitation.

During this period the following activities were taken:

  • Group living for the Young Adults eligible for the aftercare

    The group living is a concept where the young adults learn the independent life, it is a transitioning home where the young adults starts its career and self sustainable life.  

    As per the assessment conducted by DCPU and YCDA 35 young adults were identified and selected from the child care institutions for the aftercare support. The ICP for al, young adults were prepared and placed them before the CWC for their final aftercare order. Based on the final order the CWC instructed to YCDA for the financial support to the Young Adults.

    YCDA conducted the counseling and based on requirement the group living set up provided to the young adults. For their self independent life and community rehabilitation the necessary arrangements were provided.The bedding and utensils were provided to the young adults for their self cooking and community rehabilitation   

    • Career counseling to the young adult
    • A training programme was organized taking 32 young adults selecting from the CCIs of Khordha district who are eligible for the aftercare support. The following topics have been covered for the career planning.

      • General education and its opportunity
      • Technical education and its opportunity
      • Skill building training and market demand

      The professional counselors and the personal from the technical institutes participated as the resource person to facilitate the session and encouraged to the young adults to choose their selective trade for their livelihood taking their potentiality and efficiency.

      The DCPU staff and the Manager of the OSCPS participated and facilitated the session and encouraged to the young adults for their independent life.

      • Training to the young adults on the psycho social counseling

      The next session was facilitated for the psychosocial counseling and the stress management. The session was facilitated by the CWC members Ms Sadhana Panigrahi who encouraged to the young adults for their independent life and self sustainable.

      • Life skill training to the young adults

      The third session was regarding the life skill education and decision making. This session was facilitated by the DCPO and through the group discussion she trained to the young adults on their independent life.

      Linkage the young adults in different skill building training

      During this period 15 numbers of young adults have been linked with different skill based training institutes. Based on their skill and potentiality the young adults chose their trades like swing for industrial garments, Hotel management, bed assistant and fetters trades.5 numbers of young adults who had been linked earlier have got he placement and getting Rs 10000 per month and living their independent life.

    • Journey of Dreams......
    • Sita, 21years young girl had admitted into Child Care Institution (CCI), Bhubaneswar when she was only 9years old. She started a new life with loving care givers, where she continued her study there. She was kin interested to study more. After completion of higher education she entered in school of engineering and technology, Bhubaneswar under diploma course of Electronic and Tele communication. Soon after her completion of 18 years of age she was produced before the CWC for the aftercare support. The CWC approved the order and instructed YCDA for the aftercare support. There after YCDA started the aftercare intervention with an objective to make her self-sufficient and overcome her challenges. YCDA shifted her to group living home by order of Child Welfare Committee (CWC). She learnt many things to manage to herself and with her friends. She got training of life skills to manage effectively and the challenges of everyday life. As she was keen interested to do a course, after career counseling and interest mapping she had been linkaged in DDU-GKY. She enrolled at Escort Skill Development, Bhubaneswar in web designing. This training course helped her to stand on her own feet and become a self sufficient. Now she is working at Airtel, Bhubaneswar, India as BPO. This is a great achievement for her and morale boost of her confidence level. Now she is performing well and become an independent young adult.Now she is getting Rs 8000 per months and living a better life.Now her confidence level has been increased in such a way that she dreams to be a professional web designer and a progressive life.

Introduction:

Aftercare is the provision of care for children after they have reached the age of 18 years, and are discharged from Children’s Homes/Special Homes or from Child Care Institutions (CCIs). Children who have completed 18 years may be referred to as “young adults”. It is to help or prepare them to be self-independent who can be sustained by them-selves during the transition from institutional to independent life..

At age of 18 young adults are not fully equipped to handle life by themselves and need helping hand and guidance from elders. To address this need, YCDA started this Aftercare programme aiming to empower young adults to face positively the challenges of life leaving Institutional care and deprived of family care in order to help them to become financially independent and access to social , legal and health services . This programme also connects the gap for young adults who are just leaving from child care institutions. We teach them life skills frequently, easing them for taking the adult responsibilities. We facilitate for their higher education or skill training and linked to job opportunities. Vocational training is important, so that they can go to make a livable income.

YCDA is working with District Child Protection Unit(DCPU), Child welfare committee (CWC), Child Care Institutions (CCIs), District Administration and initiated group home for Aftercare children.

Rinki’s Journey… Shine in Her Life…

Rinki 19 years differently able young adult was from khurdha district. She was admitted into one Child Care Institution (CCI) in Khurdha after death of her parents. Nobody was taking care of her. She dropped out from 8th class. Being a differently able where she can’t do much work in one hand as she had interested to do and she hasn’t put off her spirit.

When we started intervention, she is in care of YCDA’s. Our aim was to make her self-sufficient and overcome her challenges. We shifted her to group living home by order of Child Welfare Committee (CWC) as she completed 18 years. She learned many things to manage to herself and with her friends. She got training of life skills to manage effectively and the challenges of everyday life. As she was keen interested to do a course, after career counseling and interest mapping she had been linkage with in DDU-GKY. She enrolled at Madhyam Foundation, Bhubaneswar in tailoring trade. This training course helped her to stand on her own feet and become a self sufficient. Now she is working at Shahi Expert, Bangalore. This is a great achievement for her and morale boost of her confidence level. Now she is performing well and become an independent young adult.
