Dear Sponsors,
We are excited to share the latest update on our beloved meerkats at DAKTARI Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage!
In our previous report, we shared the story of Karools, who faced the heartbreaking loss of his best friend Gaspar. To help ease his sadness, our staff and volunteers surrounded him with love and attention. Soon after, we welcomed four new orphaned meerkats: Tinkerbell, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, and Timon, with the hope of forming a new family.
However, not everything went as planned. Despite our efforts, the three male meerkats did not manage to bond with Karools. On the bright side, Karools and Tinkerbell formed a special connection, and we placed them together in the same enclosure. Unfortunately, after two weeks, Tinkerbell developed a wound on her leg, requiring two visits to the veterinarian. She has since been isolated to recover and is doing much better now. We are still unsure if they will be able to reunite, but if we do reintroduce them, we will monitor them closely.
Meanwhile, the three male meerkats—Pinocchio, Peter Pan, and Timon—are thriving. They spend their days happily observing the children who visit DAKTARI, often chatting away and providing endless entertainment for our young learners.
Fun Fact About Meerkats: Did you know meerkats have a special "sentry" system? While the group forages for food, one meerkat stands guard, watching for predators and alerting the group with distinct calls if danger approaches. This cooperative behavior is key to their survival in the wild!
Thank you for your continuous support and for helping us provide the best care for our meerkats. We will keep you updated on their journey and progress!
With gratitude,
The DAKTARI Team
