Working for a Hepatitis Free Pakistan !

By Dr Laila Rizvi | Executive Director

Viral Hepatitis disease burden in Pakistan is mostly due to hepatitis C virus

This is very different from the global and regional burden

Risk factors are preventable but require change in attitude and practices

Huge disease and addition of new cases is asking for financial allocations for prevention and large scale treatments

As of 2006-7 data- published in 2008

  • Pakistan had HCV positive population=8 million
  • Modeling studies showed= 150,000 new cases are added/year

Over 12 years

  • We have added=18,00,000 (1.8 M) new cases
  • Previous pool+ new cases= 9.8 million

The Health Foundation (THF) through its Hepatitis Free Community models being implemented directly within high prevalent communities aim to address the key component of Pakistan National Hepatitis Strategic Framework (NHSF) for Pakistan 2017-2021 i.e. viral hepatitis transmission is halted and everyone living with viral hepatitis has access to safe, affordable and effective prevention, care and treatment services”.

THF has established an additional 4 Hepatitis C sentinel treatment sites in the mega city of Karachi to try to cater to the poorest of the poor patients in a larger geographical scope

Screening camps are also being held to find the “missing millions” and then link them to car

Cascade of Care ( Financial year 2017-18)

Patients Identified                                         = 1648

Patinets linked to care                                  = 1444 (88%)

Patients completed treatment till date        = 1098

Patient cured (RVR & SVR)                           = 1087 (99%)

A project to support the treatment for non affording poor Hep C patients was pledged on GlobalGiving.

We look at you to join hands with THF in this uphill, challenging task to fight the menace of Hepatitis C in Pakistan which bears a huge burden of the disease (Pakistan ranks at #2 for both prevalence and incidence in the world)

God bless you for this humane deed!!
