Quarterly Report-06: Addressing Hunger Among Bangladesh's Elderly (Project ID: 64460)

Project Overview

Global Community Organization is implementing Project 64460, launched on January 1, 2025, with the objective of improving food security, health, and social protection for vulnerable elderly populations in Bagha Upazila, Rajshahi. The project is designed to ensure a dignified, secure, and sustainable life for elderly citizens while strengthening local social support systems and institutional coordination.

This initiative recognizes the growing vulnerability of older persons due to poverty, food insecurity, declining health, and limited access to social protection mechanisms. By addressing these interconnected challenges, the project aims to create a lasting positive impact on community-level social infrastructure and elderly care services.

As part of the project’s ongoing continuity and long-term intervention strategy, the activities under this reporting period have been implemented for the 6th consecutive cycle, demonstrating the organization’s sustained commitment to elderly welfare and community support in the target area.

Activities and Progress During the Quarter

During this reporting quarter, the project primarily focused on foundational and preparatory activities essential for effective full-scale implementation. A comprehensive introductory and coordination meeting was held with representatives from the local administration, community leaders, and relevant stakeholders. This meeting helped establish transparency, clarify roles and responsibilities, and foster collaboration to ensure smooth project execution.

Significant progress has been made toward the development of a digital database application designed to systematically capture and monitor the socio-economic conditions, nutritional status, and health profiles of elderly beneficiaries. This database will serve as a critical tool for evidence-based decision-making, beneficiary tracking, and impact assessment throughout the project lifecycle.

Beneficiary Reach

Through initial outreach and assessment activities, 42 individuals have directly benefited from project interventions during this quarter, including 11 senior citizens who received targeted support and consultations. These early engagements have helped identify priority needs related to food assistance, healthcare access, and social support, which will guide subsequent intervention planning.

Capacity Building and Next Steps

The project has now entered a crucial transition phase in preparation for full implementation. Planning is underway to deliver structured training programs for field-level TYAGI volunteers and project staff, focusing on elderly care, data collection, community engagement, safeguarding, and monitoring mechanisms. Strengthening human resource capacity at this stage is vital to ensuring quality service delivery and long-term sustainability.

Conclusion

The foundational steps undertaken during this quarter-stakeholder engagement, system development, beneficiary identification, and capacity-building preparation—are critical milestones for the project’s success. These activities lay a strong groundwork for scaling up interventions in the coming quarters, ultimately contributing to reduced hunger, improved health outcomes, and enhanced social protection for elderly populations in the target area.

The successful continuation of the project for the 6th consecutive implementation cycle further reflects the dedication of Global Community Organization to sustaining long-term support systems and creating meaningful social impact for elderly communities in Bangladesh.
