Cents for Seeds, at work in the community
In addition to providing effective and low-cost healthcare to the people of Otuke District in Northern Uganda, we also work with our partners at Love Mercy to support the Cents for Seeds progam.
Participating in Cents for Seeds doesn't just mean receiving a seed loan. It also means receiving financial education to help manage income from their harvest.
Participants join a "Village Savings and Loans Association" (VSLA), a community-based group that provides support and counsel, as well as official training from Love Mercy staff about how to save, earn interest, and in some cases, borrow money.
By participating in VSLA, women have reported:
• Feeling more secure with access to savings and assistance when needed
• Gaining a sense of empowerment to make their own financial decisions
• Feeling supported and a real part of their community
VSLA is one more step on the path to our vision of seeing communities in northern Uganda thriving independently. Your support of AUCF makes this possible!

A fruitful visit to Uganda
By David Fee | Director of Operations

Our recent visit to Kristina Health Centre illustrated what we already knew from the monthly reports that our Clinic Manager submits: KHC is providing high-quality, vital services to a fast-growing number of Northern Ugandans.
Free vaccinations, clean and safe labor and delivery, skilled treatment of malaria and other conditions, and a generally professional approach to serving patients have turned KHC into the region's model institution. As the staff there now describes it, KHC is "humming." (We taught them the term.)
Your donations are making a significant impact on the lives of community members who otherwise would lack any form of healthcare, let alone high-quality service — not to mention the dedicated staff members who told us that KHC has become a place of personal and professional pride.

Recovering from Nearby Ebola Outbreak
By David Fee | Director of Operations

Fortunately, Ebola did not make its way to the Otuke district where Achon Uganda Children's Fund operates Kristina Health Clinic. But it got close.
While our skilled medical team at KHC did not have to treat any cases of Ebola, the outbreak did cause us to divert resources to preparing for it. It also caused us to cancel critical community outreach programs that would have brought healthcare, child health and family planning services to surrounding communitites. And it lead to the cancellation of two important fundraising programs: a visit by the AUCF team from the US to Uganda (in part to host a soccer tournament and distribute donated uniforms and equipment!), and the visit by Julius Achon to Australia to visit our partner organization, Love Mercy.
We are committed to raising the planned funds to support our new neonatal care program, including the installation of our incubator and required staff training. We finally have reliable electricity--no more spotty solar!--and are ready to make a big leap forward in safe child births and neonatal care. But it's one of the most expensive new programs we have offered.
We appreciate your ongoing support of AUCF and KHC.
Thank you!
