ABKT's Flood Relief Initiative in Pakistan

7th Quarterly Progress Report

June–August 2025

Introduction to the Organization The Association for Behavior and Knowledge Transformation (ABKT) was founded in 1992 by a group of courageous women activists in the Dir district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and registered with the Social Welfare Department on 16th June 1994 under the Voluntary Social Welfare Agencies (Registration and Control) Ordinance 1961.

ABKT is the first women-led organization in Malakand Division, committed to the rights, development, and empowerment of marginalized groups, particularly women, children, and youth, in conservative and culturally sensitive areas of Pakistan.

Over the last three decades, ABKT has implemented nearly 100 projects in diverse thematic areas, responding to humanitarian crises and promoting long-term development.

Organizational Experience in Humanitarian Response ABKT has a strong legacy of emergency relief, early recovery, and rehabilitation interventions.

Notable initiatives include:

• Restoration of healthcare facilities in militancy-affected Swat (supported by WHO).

• Rehabilitation of flood-damaged suspension bridges and irrigation channels (with UNDP and district administration).

• Reproductive health and hygiene promotion projects for IDPs (with UNICEF, USAID/Abt Associates, IPDS, and volunteers).

• Peacebuilding projects for youth in militancy-affected areas (with UNDP and TCKP).

Vision & Mission

• Vision: A democratic, prosperous, and peaceful society that guarantees equal development opportunities for all.

• Mission: To empower socially, economically, and politically marginalized communities—especially women, youth, and children, through mobilization, capacity building, economic empowerment, and advocacy for rights and entitlements.

Geographical Coverage:

ABKT has worked extensively in Lower Dir, Upper Dir, Swat, Shangla, Malakand, Hazara Division (Abbottabad, Mansehra, Batagram, and Haripur), and IDP-hosting districts such as Mardan, Peshawar, and Swabi. Nationally, ABKT has led advocacy initiatives, including Women’s Voices Pakistan.

Progress Made in the 7th Quarter

1. Rapid Needs Assessments and Data-Driven Advocacy:

During the recent floods in Swat, Buner, and Lower Dir (August 2025), ABKT deployed field teams to conduct real-time needs assessments. Data on shelter loss, agricultural destruction, food insecurity, and women’s health needs was compiled and shared with UN OCHA, district administrations, and humanitarian partners. This evidence-based report is informing coordinated relief efforts and resource mobilization.

2. Community Voice and Policy Engagement:

ABKT has amplified the voices of flood-affected communities through active representation in humanitarian cluster meetings, civil society forums, and media engagement. Advocacy has focused on ensuring gender-responsive relief planning, highlighting the disproportionate impact of floods on women, children, and marginalized groups.

3. Emergency Relief and Life-Saving Support:

ABKT provided immediate humanitarian relief in the most affected areas of Swat, Buner, and Lower Dir. Key interventions included:

• Distribution of food packages, hygiene kits, and NFIs.

• Establishment of temporary medical camps with a special focus on maternal and child health.

• Provision of clean drinking water.

4. Restoring Livelihoods and Community Infrastructure Building on past recovery efforts, ABKT will design and plan small-scale rehabilitation projects to support livelihoods and community resilience, including:

• Rehabilitation of irrigation channels and footbridges damaged by the floods.

• Support to farmers through the distribution of seeds, fertilizers, and farming inputs.

• Mobilization of community groups for collective action in rebuilding agricultural productivity.

5. Climate-Resilient Agriculture and Capacity Building Recognizing the growing climate vulnerability of the region, ABKT will expand its agricultural capacity-building program. Highlights include:

• Training sessions for farmers on climate-smart techniques, including vertical tomato farming and soil conservation methods.

• Technical consultations with agriculture experts to promote adaptive practices.

• Inclusion of women farmers in training and resource distribution to enhance household resilience and food security.
