In December 2025, two Japanese nonprofits partnered to help isolated youth: Terra Renaissance, which has supported war- and disaster-affected communities abroad for 20+ years, and Aim, which walks Fukuoka's streets at night to find young people with nowhere else to turn. Instead of waiting for youth to ask for help, staff go directly to where they are, build trust over time, and stay by their side for as long as it takes-pairing global experience with local, street-level care.
In Japan, reports of child abuse to public child-welfare offices have risen 200-fold in 30 years, overwhelming the system-so children and young people's problems often go unresolved. These offices can only help people while they are legally children. Once someone ages out, the hardship from earlier abuse doesn't simply end. Even when help is needed, many grow into adults without connecting to support or learning to lean on others-so they, and society, assume they must handle everything alone.
Aim's staff walk Fukuoka's streets at night, meeting youth face-to-face instead of waiting for them to come in. Terra Renaissance brings 20+ years of experience helping people rebuild their lives after war and disaster. Together, the two organizations train staff, study what works, raise public awareness, and build lasting personal relationships with young people-so even those who trust no one can find a caring adult who stays with them long enough to help them build a stable, independent life.
This project is building a model other communities across Japan can copy: meet vulnerable youth where they are, earn trust through everyday contact, and stay by their side until they're ready for independence. Starting in Fukuoka, the two organizations plan to expand it nationwide. For Terra Renaissance, this is its first major effort to apply 20+ years of experience rebuilding lives after war and disaster to youth inside Japan-bridging overseas lessons with local, grassroots care.
