Dear Donor,
It is with great pleasure that I present to you our progress report on the project to build a new school for HAI in Kabiria.
Since the campaign began on November 26, 2023, we have raised approximately USD 102,000 from over 350 donors, not only through the GlobalGiving platform, but also through direct donations received in Brazil, Europe and Kenya. I am still amazed at the support we have received from all of you donors for this project and I am happy that early childhood education in Africa is able to engage so many people.
Construction work on the new school began in May of this year and is expected to be completed in 6 months, by the end of October. To hire the company responsible for the construction work, we followed the best market practices, and the process included:
The process was finally won by the construction company Bonya Investments Limited, from Nairobi, whose head is Mr. Bonface Nyangau. The choice of contractor has proven to be correct so far, with the works following schedule and with the expected quality. The works are being monitored by the architects CODE Studio, from Nairobi, as well as by surveyor Martin Njoroge, and independent engineer Kelvin Mwenda, from James Kelvin Consultancy Ltd.
The photographs presented in the attached document show the progress of the works based on the architects' conceptual design.
Energy and Water
One of the major problems in the Kabiria region, and in Kenya as a whole, is the supply of energy and drinking water to the population. In the best areas of Nairobi, power is often cut off, and in the suburbs and more vulnerable areas the outages can be long and impact people's quality of life. The water provided by the public system is not recommended for human consumption and does not reach all regions. The solution commonly found by the underserved population is to build wells. In this case, however, the quality of the water can be even lower. In recent weeks, we have been negotiating with several suppliers of solar energy and high-quality water filters to define the best models for our school. We are looking for practical, efficient, renewable, and low-cost solutions. Our goal is for the children in the new HAI to have electricity and drinking water to help them learn and develop properly.
Next steps
Despite the progress of the construction and our success in the fundraising process so far, we still need to raise approximately USD 18,000 to complete the budget for the construction of the school. We are continuing to work on raising funds and are confident that we will complete it successfully. We will keep you updated over the next 2 months on the progress of the final part of the construction, through regular reports, newsletters, and other communication channels, and also about the partnerships we have established to provide water and electricity to the school. As usual, I welcome any feedback or suggestions you may have as we strive to make this project a success.
Once again, and as I said in the last letter, thank you for your unwavering support and belief in our mission. Together, we are transforming lives and creating brighter futures for the children of Kabiria, Kenya. If you have any questions or would like further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Best regards,
