Challenge

Economic, political and social instability in Mozambique is at an all-time high and poverty levels and the number of orphan and vulnerable children are increasing. Disadvantaged children suffer from malnutrition, poor living conditions, lack of education and lack of access to quality care. Their caregivers mostly women have limited access resources or to markets, productive services, education and to health care for them and their children.

Solution

Through Village Savings and Loan Association groups, the project will reach out to 1,062 Caregivers of 3,186 Orphan and Vulnerable Children (OVC) to promote savings to raise money for investment and starting small businesses. In these groups, caregivers will be provided with Life skills training and business skills which will facilitate provision of health services, social awareness and response of emergency cases for the OVC thus ensuring improvement of their conditions and self-reliance.

Long-Term Impact

The project will provide 3,186 Orphan and Vulnerable Children (OVC) with health, education, and nutrition as well as legal protection, allowing them to improve their quality of life in the short-term and have the skills and abilities to prosper as adults. 1,062 caregivers of HIV positive children will be empowered in aspects like Life Skills and sustainable livelihood development and thus reduction of their vulnerability to the ills of poverty, social exclusion and discrimination.
