THE FELINE PROJECT

By Gudrun Olaya | Project Leader

Dear donor and friend, as you may have noticed, our House for Cats and Kids is still a project to be realized, because we haven´t found our own place yet. Nevertheless, we’ve learned to make baby steps in order to keep on moving. We reached out to a small village, where the municipality are just beginning to start thinking about animal protection. Especially the rural areas with open fields and farms are affected by a huge number of cat colonies. Whenever we have some space at our foster’s, we receive a litter of kittens. We spay the mom and release her a week later at the same place we captured her. The kittens are dewormed and given in adoption, with the compromise to spay/neuter them before adolescence. This process is supervised. Another emergency hotspot is Santa Marta, a turistic coastal town with a tremendous feline overpopulation, where you can find hundreds of cats near the coliseum. A rescue of this nature is costly, not only because of the transport costs (by plane), but in contrast to the near by village, where the cats grow in a healthy climate, a 90% of the kittens is sick with dehydration, malnutrition, eye and dermatological problems, fever and cat flu. It’s a great effort, but when you watch them turning into healthy jumping fluffballs, it’s worth it. All of them find their forever homes, always! We are so pleased that you are a part of this story, thank you.
