The Torties

By Gudrun Olaya | Project Leader

Dear donor and friend!! Since I fell in love and adopted a Tortoiseshell kitten, and only since then, I noticed that there is a lot of prejudice, even disgust towards them. Their adoption rate is very low, though they are extremely healthy, loving, sweet, independent, vocal and balanced. People do not imagine the wonderful creature that they are rejecting. Their beautiful coat shows patterns like those of a tortoise’s shell, each tortie has their own mosaic, unique like a fingerprint.

You can find torties all around the world, and not always they have a bad reputation, but are considered a symbol for good luck, as in Germany, for example. In former times Japanese sailors did not set sail without a tortoiseshell cat to ward off evil spirits. Celtic culture says that having a tortie will bring fortune to the home. As in the United States, they are currently also considered the cats of money and fortune.

The legend of the Tortoiseshell cat. (found on the Internet, author unknown)

A long time ago, the Sun decided that he wanted to participate in life on Earth. So, he asked the Moon for help, to cover his absence, so that humans would not realize that the king of all the stars and planets was no longer in his place. The Moon accepted and slowly but inexorably took the position of the Sun, so that the Sun, eager to live the experiences of a world that he felt was far away, took the form of one of the animals in which he would best go unnoticed and that fascinated him so much. He chose a black cat.

And so, time passed, the Sun lived intensely those days on earth until the Moon, tired of waiting for his return, decided to retire. The Sun had to come out quickly from the body of the black cat to take his place in the sky, but due to his rapid flight, thousands of rays of luminous and golden glitter covered and were trapped in the magical fur of the black cat. Since then, the daughters of that cat have carried the memory of the rays and golden sparkles that the Sun forgot in their mother, as well as her temperament and wisdom.
