This project will help Seeds for a Future to provide printed nutrition garden manuals as well as seeds and fertilizer to the Finca Buena Vista primary school in San Felipe, Retalhuleu. We will help teacher & students install a garden with nutritious and healthful plants that they will care for. Cooking activities will teach children about better nutrition & healthier food for themselves & their family. Important knowledge & practical skills will improve the future of young rural boys and girls.
Access to education is often limited for children and especially girls in rural areas of Guatemala. The Finca Buena Vista primary school offers education to over 25 students from the nearby village of San Felipe. The right nutrition can improve brain and memory capacity of the kids. Quality foods and healthy meals are important so the students can concentrate and learn during classes, especially on tropical hot days.
Our field extensionists provide seeds and seedlings to start the school's nutrition garden and lead nutrition workshops for teacher and students on a frequent basis. We give students important learn-by-doing experiences that will improve their health, concentration and school results. Combining classroom teaching about healthful plants and veggies and then planting, growing and preparing nutritious foods will give important life-time skills to the children and their families.
Each student will be provided with a Seeds for a Future manual on School Gardens and detailed easy-to read Nutrition Charts. After finishing primary school, all students will have improved knowledge about nutrition and growing healthy plants on small spaces. During the school year, students will become healthier and better educated at the same time, achieving practical experience on cultivating foods and preparing nutritious meals.
