One Arepa for my Country

Leivimar is 12 years old, is in 6th grade at Canaima School and lives in La Pradera sector, in the highest part of La Vega -one of the poorest neighborhoods of Caracas, the capital of Venezuela- with her mother and his other two brothers. Her father does not live with them ... Leivimar tells us that "What I like most about school is the dining room, because there is delicious food there. At home we don't have much food and we go hungry, sometimes we do not have dinner".

Luis Alejandro, meanwhile, is 15 years old and is in 10th grade. He is the best student in his class. From school he likes not only everything he learns but also the interest that teachers show towards students. They go beyond a teacher-student relationship, they are interested in the problems we have, whether inside or outside our institution, they help us and contribute to its solution. When asked about the support his dining room receives through the "Una Arepa Para Mi País" program, Luis tells us:

"In this critical situation (in Venezuela), I am very grateful for the help that you are giving us ... because these schools are so distant in this high part of La Vega and you believe in us. I am very grateful for this help that "Una Arepa Para mi país" is giving us ... At home sometimes we have a lot of difficulties, since the salary that my father and mother earn is not enough to feed us well and we are a fairly large family with 5 brothers. Literally money is not enough and sometimes we have to go to bed without eating ... that's why I value a lot the food they give us  and whenever I can, I repeat "

The "One arepa for my country" Program, carried out by the Oportunidad y Futuro Foundation together with the Pabellón Con Arepa Foundation, benefits a total of 574 students in two schools located in La Vega. Of these, 66 students come from Cacique Maturín Preschool (from 1st to 3rd level) and 508 from Canaima School (3rd level of preschool to 10th grade) of which, on average, 100 have breakfast and the total (508) have lunch and snack.

Professor Miriam Poveda, director of preschool Cacique Maturín, upon receiving the first donation of the program "Una Arepa Para mi País", told us about the harsh reality of her pre-school children:

"The contribution we receive from parents is very low to give a quality food to the children. We have had to cut on giving them proteins because we do not have the money, and that means that the child does not receive what is necessary for a healthy growth ...For 26 years, we gave 3 meals (breakfast, lunch and snack). Two years ago we eliminated snacks because the costs were too high and we did not have enough resources. Then, we eliminated breakfast for the same reason ... some children are bringing the arepas (Venezuelan bread made up of corn) alone, without filling, and for juice a glass of water. It is not juice as such what they bring, simply water. And that make feel sad, because first of all I am a mother and I am an educator. I believe that no one who loves what he does, accepts what we are going through in Venezuela. "

Professor Carmen Rodríguez, deputy director of the Canaima School and in charge of the food and nutrition area of this institution, speaks very positively about the "Una Arepa para mi País" program and greatly appreciates the donors and all those who make it possible:

"With the situation in venezuela, this is definitely a great project that helps many children as many are lacking food. At the moment, we know that we are suffering and going through hardship ... and I invite you to continue supporting the schools because we know that it is through education that we are going to change this very battered reality that we are living ... I pray, thanks God and the virgin bless everyone so that people continue having strength and much enthusiasm to continue supporting the wealth of so many children who need and appreciate the help ... a huge hug. "

The children of the preschool Cacique Maturín, also thank the donors, Ambassadors of Arepa and all those who make possible the program "Una Arepa para mi Pais". But they do it as only they know how to do it: eating, smiling, playing and learning, thanks to the fact that they have a full belly and teachers who love them and teach them a lot.

As the teacher Miriam puts it:

"Even though many are here in Venezuela and many others outside of the country, we are still one country ... some work outside and others are still here working hard. Every little grain of salt that we receive in this institution we receive it with much love and care. And I know that our children will receive it equally. Together we will make this country move forward. United we will be able to get out of this and to return to be what we were always: Our beautiful Venezuela ".

Leivimar tiene 12 años de edad, estudia 6º grado en la Escuela Canaima, vive en el sector La Pradera, en la parte más alta de la parroquia La Vega, con su madre y sus otros dos hermanos. Su papá no vive con ellos… Leivimar nos dice que “Lo que más me gusta de la escuela es el comedor, porque hay comida rica y en mi casa hay poca comida y pasamos hambre, a veces no cenamos”

Luis Alejandro por su parte, tiene 15 años y estudia 3er año, tiene el mejor promedio de su salón. De su escuela le gusta, aparte de todo lo que aprende, el interés que los profesores muestran hacia nosotros, ya que van más allá de una relación profesor-alumno, se interesan por los problemas que tenemos nosotros así sea fuera de nuestra institución, también nos ayudan y aportan para su solución. Al preguntarle sobre el apoyo que recibe su comedor a través del programa “Una Arepa Para Mi País”, Luis nos comenta:

“En este momento, como está la situación, estoy muy agradecido por esta ayuda que nos están dando… porque se han acordado que, aquí arriba, en esta parte alta de La Vega existen unos colegios y ellos creen en nosotros y estoy muy agradecido por esta ayuda que “Una Arepa Para mi país” nos está aportando… En mi casa a veces pasamos muchas dificultades, ya que el sueldo que ganan mi papá y mi mamá no nos abastece para alimentarnos bien y somos una familia bastante amplia con 5 hermanos, literalmente  no nos alcanza y a veces nos toca acostarnos sin comer…   por eso acá el alimento que nos dan lo valoro mucho y, siempre que puedo repito comida”       

El Programa “Una arepa para mi país” llevado a cabo por la Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro conjuntamente con la Fundación Pabellón Con Arepa, beneficia un total de 574 estudiantes en dos escuelas ubicadas la Vega, uno de los barrios mas pobres de Caracas, la capital de Venezuela. De ellos, 66 estudiantes viene del Preescolar Cacique Maturín (de 1er. a 3er. nivel) y 508 estudian en la Escuela Canaima (de 3er nivel de preescolar hasta 1º a 3º año de bachillerato) de los cuales, en promedio, 100 desayunan y el total (508 almuerzan y meriendan).

La profesora Miriam Poveda, directora del preescolar Cacique Maturín, al recibir la primera donación del programa “Una Arepa Para mi País” nos relató la dura realidad que viven sus niños del pre escolar:

   “El aporte que percibimos del aporte de los representantes es muy bajo para dar una alimentación de calidad a los niños. Tenemos que privarnos de darle las proteínas porque no nos alcanza el dinero, y eso hace que el niño no reciba lo necesario para su alimentación y crecimiento…  Nosotros durante 26 años dábamos las 3 ingestas (desayuno, almuerzo y merienda). Hace dos años quitamos la merienda porque los costos eran demasiado elevados y no alcanzaba para impartir la merienda. Luego tuvimos que quitar los desayunos por la misma razón… algunos niños están trayendo las arepas solas, sin relleno, y de jugo un vaso con agua. No es jugo como tal lo que están trayendo, sino agua. Y eso hace que moralmente me sienta mal, porque antes que todo soy madre y soy educadora. Yo creo que nadie que ame lo que hace, acepta esto que estamos pasando en Venezuela”. 

Por su parte, la profesora Carmen Rodríguez, subdirectora de la Escuela Canaima y encargada del área de alimentación y nutrición de dicha institución, nos habla muy positivamente del programa “Una Arepa para mi País” yagradece enormemente a los donantes y todos quienes lo hacen posible:

   “En esta situación país que tenemos ahorita me parece que es un muy buen proyecto que tienen en función por supuesto de tantos chamos y tantas personas carentes de la alimentación. Ahorita, en este momento donde sabemos que estamos sufriendo muchas penurias...  y les invito a que sigan apoyando a las escuelas porque sabemos que es a través de la educación cómo vamos a cambiar esta realidad tan maltratada que estamos viviendo… Está de más pedirle a Dios, darle gracias a Dios y desearles una bendición para que sigan construyendo, para que sigan aportando cada uno de ellos, con el bien y con los alimentos… que Dios y la virgen le bendigan para que sigan teniendo fortaleza y mucho entusiasmo para seguir apoyando en bien de tantos niños que necesitan y agradecen su ayuda… un enorme abrazo”.

Los niños del preescolar Cacique Maturín, también agradecen a los donantes, embajadores de la Arepa y todos quienes hacen posible el programa “Una Arepa para mi País”. Perolo hacen como sólo ellos saben hacerlo: comiendo, sonriendo, jugando y aprendiendo, gracias a que tiene su barriguita llena y unos maestros que les quieren y les enseñan mucho:

Y Como bien lo dijo la profe Miriam:

“Como venezolanos que somos, acá en Venezuela y fuera de Venezuela seguimos siendo un solo país… unos trabajan afuera y otros seguimos aquí trabajando duro también. Ese granito de arena que hoy estamos recibiendo en esta institución lo hacemos con mucho cariño y amor. Y sé que nuestros niños lo recibirán igualmente. Unidos lograremos que este país avance, unidos lograremos salir de esto y volver a ser lo que éramos siempre: Nuestra bella Venezuela”.
