Juan is a brave 10-year old boy who has suffered severe burns during a fire in his house. Currently, he is living with his family on a mountain outside of Lima, Peru without electricity or running water. With a face reconstruction operation and the application of two tissue expanders we will be able to improve the scars on his face noticeably and this way, make him smile again as before! In our center in Peru, we receive on average one new patient that has suffered severe burns every day. 70% of these accidents happen due to hot liquids, 20% due to fire and they mostly affect children younger than 6 years old. In the case of Juan, his bedroom caught fire when he was 6 years old and after two month in the hospital, he came to ANIQUEM to receive his treatments. For a full rehabilitation, Juan still needs two tissue expanders which will make his scars in the face almost invisible.
Due to your donation, Juans face will only have a small, almost unnoticeable scar. In an operation we will insert 2 tissue expanders to grow new skin that we can then implant on his face. This will significantly improve his life quality as he would not have to be afraid of people staring at him or kids bullying him any more. This way you will be able to give Juan not only his smile back but a whole new future. Juans family is not able to pay for the operation as they live in extreme poverty.
Through one year of integral rehabilitation these 7 burned children will not only get the necessary medical treatment but will also learn how to live with their external and internal scars. Our ultimate goal is to improve their life quality, so that the kids are able to live a normal life again and convert them and their families into prevention ambassadors in their community. Together with the distribution of prevention messages they can help us to decrease the number of burn accidents in Peru.
