Expanding the Digital Classroom: Taking Computer Skills to More Underserved Communities

By Seguya Ivan | Project leader

The impact of computer skilling should not stop at the boundaries of one community. Our next step is to take digital learning closer to girls and boys in underserved communities where access to computers, internet resources, and practical technology training remains limited.

Our expansion approach is designed to ensure that young people from different backgrounds can benefit from the same opportunities. We are reaching communities where poverty, limited infrastructure, and inadequate access to technology can prevent children and adolescents from developing skills required in today's increasingly digital world.

Through community-based computer training, participants can learn essential skills such as typing, document creation, presentations, spreadsheets, internet research, online communication, and responsible technology use. These skills strengthen academic participation while helping young people understand how technology can support their future careers and businesses.

The program also creates productive engagement. Girls and boys who participate in structured digital learning have opportunities to spend their time acquiring useful knowledge, interacting positively with peers, and working toward personal goals. This can help reduce exposure to some of the circumstances associated with risky behavior, including early sexual relationships and teenage pregnancy.

Donor support is essential to making expansion possible. Additional computers, internet access, electricity solutions, learning materials, trainers, maintenance, and safe learning spaces are needed to establish and sustain training in new communities.

Our ambition is to build a wider network of digitally empowered young people who can become role models and knowledge ambassadors within their communities. A trained girl can teach another girl. A trained boy can help another young person discover technology.

By supporting expansion, donors are helping transform digital exclusion into opportunity and ensuring that more young people can participate confidently in the digital future.
