On August 10 2024, a tragic landslide occurred at the Kiteezi Landfill in Uganda, resulting in a catastrophic loss of life and serious injuries to many individuals. This report aims to provide an overview of the current situation, outline the urgent needs for rescue operations, and appeal for immediate financial assistance to support relief efforts.
Situation Overview
The Kiteezi landfill disaster has resulted in hundreds of individuals being buried beneath approximately 40 meters of rubble. Efforts to locate and rescue those trapped have been hampered by the unstable conditions of the landfill site, which poses significant risks to rescue teams and the survivors who remain trapped. As the hours turn into days, the urgent necessity of a focused response becomes increasingly critical.
Immediate Needs
1. Rescue Operations
- Hundreds of individuals are still unaccounted for and require immediate rescue. The top priority is to locate and extract survivors buried under the debris. Expert teams with appropriate equipment and experience are urgently needed on-site.
2. Medical Assistance
- Many of the survivors may be injured and in need of immediate medical attention. Medical supplies, including first aid kits, pain relievers, and trauma care, are urgently required. Additionally, we need trained medical personnel to provide on-site assistance.
3. Basic Necessities
- Survivors who have escaped the disaster are in desperate need of food, clean water, clothing, bedding, and sanitary supplies. A focused effort must be made to distribute these essentials to those affected by the disaster.
4. Psychosocial Support
- The trauma associated with this disaster is immense. Access to counseling and mental health resources should be instituted to provide support and comfort to those affected.
Current Challenges
Rescue efforts are being hindered by several factors:
- The precarious state of the landfill poses risks for rescue teams.
- Limited resources and financial instability affect the availability of necessary equipment and supplies.
- The scale of the disaster demands coordinated action from local authorities, NGOs, and international assistance.
Call for Action: Urgent Financial Assistance
To address the pressing needs arising from this tragedy, we are calling on individuals, businesses, and organizations to contribute urgently to our relief fund. Your financial support is crucial to enable us to:
- Equip rescue teams with the necessary tools and safety gear.
- Provide immediate medical assistance and long-term health care.
- Distribute food, clothing, bedding, and essential hygiene products to those impacted.
- Facilitate mental health assessments and counseling for affected individuals.
