Dear Friends,
Thank you for joining with Guitars in the Classroom to become an angel for TK-6 students in our highest needs schools. This week we are launching a six-week training for 20 teachers in Oakland, California. Teachers who complete this training will begin leading music for academic and social-emotional learning with the free instruments and supplies they receive. The young learners in their classrooms, many of whom are facing extreme adversity in other areas of their lives, will have the opportunity to experience ease through music during the school day.
As a result of your generosity, Guitars in the Classroom has been able to train teachers in several districts across the country with needs similar to Oakland this fall. Teachers have received free instruments, supplies and weekly training after school, and students are benefitting from the influx of singing and strumming. Teachers report using music to teach academic concepts through song, as well as to create a positive classroom culture, transition from one activity to the next and provide “a nice break when children are starting to feel overwhelmed in the classroom”.
Although we are now ready to retire this particular microproject, Guitars in the Classroom remains committed to serving students from families facing deep economic hardship. We are currently fundraising to provide students experiencing homelessness with free durable, portable, colorful and waterproof Waterman ukuleles. Too many of our students find themselves without the anchor of a permanent address, subject to changes over which they have no control that come upon them without warning. They need a way to soothe, comfort and lift themselves up wherever they go. Making music can provide this ever-present, healing force.
We can’t thank you enough for your partnership in this work. It’s because of you that Guitars in the Classroom continues to make a difference in the lives of students who need our help the most.
With Gratitude,
