Our Community Tree Nursery in Um Ga'al Village, Darfur is underway! With your help we can plant 2,500 more trees. Seedlings will be planted around the village, and in nearby Kids for Kids villages, to provide shade, fruit and byproducts which can be sold, used as pesticides, even purify water. And they transform the desert, giving shade where there is none. While we provide urgent aid to families in Sudan, we must also think to the future. Our sustainable projects transform lives long-term.
Darfur is at the forefront of climate change, suffering from drought and desertification as well as resource scarcity. Trees transform the desert, provide shade, fruit, cooler temperatures, increased rainfall if enough are planted, and byproducts that provide extra income. The ongoing conflict in Sudan has led to a decrease in resources. Fruit Trees tackle food insecurity, providing a sustainable food source. Moringa, Neem, Acacia Senegal and more provide byproducts that we teach people to use.
This project will provide thousands of trees to reforest the desert and combat food insecurity. 15 species of trees will be planted in Um Ga'al Village. This is the furthest North Kids for Kids village where many displaced families now live. These 2,500 seedlings are half of the 5,000 planned for the start of the Community Nursery - already underway - to benefit local residents and the nearby regions around AlSayah, Mallit and Malha.
Planting trees creates microclimates around villages in Darfur where moisture levels are virtually non-existent. Microclimates reduce the temperature of soil and stabilise moisture levels, reducing desertification and degradation. The result is a more successful crop yield for communities, leading to an increased income and a reduction in food insecurity. Vegetables are planted in their shade. Byproducts from trees provide medicines, leaves full of vitamin C, pesticides and much more.
