Challenge

Afghan women have been left behind in terms of education and social equality as they live in a country still battling violence and civil strife. Many families live in poverty and the women suffer the most with the lack of education hindering their ability to improve their circumstances. They need education and income-generating skills so they can provide for their families and start small businesses. This project will create a small poultry farm near a AIL Learning Center.

Solution

A small poultry farm near a AIL Learning Center will enable 10 women to work taking care of the birds. The land, supplies, birds, food, water and coops will be provided for 6 months. The women will also attend the center to improve their education with classes such as literacy and math. The birds will be raised for meat and eggs with proceeds from sales being distributed among the women. The women will gain valuable business and agricultural skills and improve their education.

Long-Term Impact

10 families will benefit from this project with poultry produce and income from sales. Four women will be training to create and manage a small farm; they will train another 6 women. Many of the women are illiterate and live in poverty. They will gain education at the center and income-generating skills from the poultry farming. The project will help pull 10 families out of poverty giving 10 women a way for them to provide for their families, earn money and gain respect for their abilities.
