Dear Climate Action Fund member,
In 2022, many global communities faced mounting challenges imposed by the climate crisis. The five members of GlobalGiving’s Climate Action Fund continued to support and collaborate with their communities to build resilience and ensure a brighter (and greener) tomorrow.
Instituto de la Naturaleza y la Sociedad de Oaxaca, A.C. | Mexico
Following Hurricane Agatha, Instituto de la Naturaleza named their main project “Slow Water: reweaving natural & social fabric.” They relaunched activities in their demonstration centers and their home orchard family workshops. With warm temperatures and summer rains, Instituto de la Naturaleza installed more slow water systems. These practices channel and store water in ways that promote regeneration.
Instituto Chaikuni | Peru
Instituto Chaikuni hosted two 33-day Amazonian Permaculture courses with 28 participants worldwide. They have been able to bring agroforestry outreach work to Indigenous communities. In mid-August, a group of 20 Kukama and Shawi representatives participated in a five-day course, "Introduction to Permaculture and Amazonian Agroforestry." The following month, their second Diálogo de Saberes (wisdom/knowledge dialogue) brought Shawi, Kukama, and Bora peoples, Indigenous students from the Organization of Indigenous Students from the Peruvian Amazon, local communities, and agroforestry experts together. By the end of September, Instituto Chaikuni had assisted local families in installing eight hectares of agroforestry systems.
Sadhana Forest | Kenya
Following one of the biggest rainfall events in four years, Sadhana Forest made encouraging connections with many communities while scouting locations for future food forest projects. Some of these locations have the potential to become productive food forests. Still, other regions are suffering from arid conditions, and they plan to focus on designing intense water conservation systems and planting small and productive food forests. Sadhana Forest is beginning these collaborations.
EcoLogic Development Fund | Mexico + Central America
EcoLogic has secured the protection of 22.5 hectares of mangroves by working with communities in Sarstún, Guatemala to develop a management plan and help them secure long-term lease agreements for their land. They also carried out four workshops in collaboration with the Creative Action Institute to train 20 teachers and 30 young people in creative advocacy using an arts-based methodology to generate solutions to environmental problems within the territory of Totonicapán.
Reef Check Malaysia | Malaysia
The success of Reef Check Malaysia’s programs is heavily dependent on the local communities. Communities like those on Mantanani Island, where Diana, a local champion, is fulfilling her dream of creating a cleaner environment.
After following Cintai Mantanani’s work, she was called to join their team. Now, she is the Assistant Programme Manager who helps to oversee the Mantanani Waste Management program. "I would like to see a clean Mantanani Island, free from the trash that disrupts its beauty," Diana shared when asked about her motivation.
She also hopes that the local community will continue to support the program. To date, there are 176 families (913 people) from Kampung Siring Bukit and Kampung Padang that are involved in the Waste Management Programme on Mantanani Island. For an island of about 1,000 people, that’s almost everyone in the village!
Local leaders are empowering the next generation to tend to the land and, in turn, protect the communities that live in these environments. Thanks in part to your support, they are empowered to continue to do so in creative and inspiring ways.
Thank you for your commitment to protecting our planet!
With gratitude,
Tebben + the GlobalGiving Team
