In the span of the past year, we’ve all had our daily lives turned upside down. In the words of Robin Van Loon, Founding Director of Camino Verde: “We’ve all experienced a new normal, then a different new normal, then something that doesn’t seem so normal after all, and now here we are.”
As leaders in the 2020/2021 Climate Action Fund, Robin and the rest of the Camino Verde team are working to revitalize the Peruvian Amazon through reforestation and conservation education. Over the past year, the team has navigated curfews in surrounding communities, restrictions on volunteer programming, and changes in personal routines in the face of COVID-19. Yet in the midst of these obstacles, they’ve taken amazing strides in revitalizing the Amazon—and protecting the people and animals that call it home. The numbers speak for themselves:
By leading reforestation efforts in some of the most vulnerable parts of the Amazon, the Camino Verde team is not only protecting precious biodiversity but also playing a crucial role in building resilience in the face of the global climate crisis. Underpinning these successes is an unfailing sense of hope—and an unwavering commitment to protecting our home.
“This is the legacy we want to leave, and this is the way of life we want to lead. One in which we don’t see humans as the only people, one in which our gifts as a species exist in coordinated service of a greater whole, the web of life,” Robin shared.
This legacy—a legacy of regeneration, conservation, and compassion for our entire planet—is one that each and every one of you has played a crucial part in. Thanks to your generosity and the dedication of local climate leaders around the world, Camino Verde is one of many fearless teams building innovative solutions to the climate crisis.
