This year is ending in a way no one hoped for.
Instead of celebrating progress for girls’ education, Nigeria is closing 2025 with some of the worst attacks on schools and students in recent years. In the last days alone, classrooms have been invaded, girls have been abducted, teachers murdered, families devastated and entire communities thrown into fear.
Today in Northern Nigeria, a classroom is no longer a safe place, it is a target. And for thousands of girls, education has become a risk not a right.
The recent abductions of girls taken from Maga Girls Secondary School in Kebbi, over 100 students kidnapped in Niger State and the continuous attacks spreading across Zamfara, Sokoto, Borno, Kwara have shaken the nation to its core.
These are not isolated tragedies. They are a pattern of violence threatening to erase a generation of educated girls.
The implications are severe:
For Girls, fear is replacing ambition. Families are withdrawing daughters from school. Girls who once dreamed of becoming doctors, teachers, and innovators now face the possibility of early marriage, exploitation, or a lifetime of poverty.
For Families, Parents who want a better life for their children are torn between hope and survival. Many now fear sending their daughters to school at all.
For the Country Nigeria, when girls stop learning, communities weaken. Poverty deepens. Insecurity grows. Nigeria loses future leaders, innovators and changemakers.
For our organizations Girls Education Mission International, every attack increases the demand for our work and the risk to our team. We are supporting girls in communities where schools have closed, providing emergency learning support, psychosocial care, safe-space mentorship and advocating for protection even while navigating the danger ourselves.
This crisis is bigger than us.
But we refuse to give up.
Not on the girls. Not on their futures.
Why We Need Your Support Now
As the year ends, we are launching an Emergency End-of-Year Appeal to help us:
Provide emergency education support for girls whose schools were shut down.
Expand our Safe Learning Spaces and digital learning alternatives.
Deliver psychosocial support to traumatized girls and families.
Support girls at high risk of dropping out.
Strengthen community protection networks.
Relocate and protect girls who are in immediate danger.
Equip GEM’s frontline team to continue serving safely.
Every contribution, big or small help us reach another girl whose dreams are slipping away.
Right now, Nigerian girls are standing at a crossroads of Education or extinction, of Hope or fear, of a future or a void.
Your support can be the difference between a girl staying in school or being lost to early marriage, exploitation, trafficking or lifelong poverty.
Your support says to her:
“I see you. I believe in you. Your future matters.”
Before this year ends, help us protect a girl’s tomorrow.
