The project is to help reduce the Challenges girls face in accessing equitable, inclusive and quality education in Sierra Leone.
Sierra Leone is among the ten countries with highest rates of teenage pregnancy in the world. The reported rates of teenage pregnancy range from 28.3% to 34%, with an adolescent fertility rate standing at 102 per 1000. (BMC Public Health, Mar 2023). In Sierra Leone, most secondary schools are found in district or chiefdom headquarters. This makes it difficult for girls in rural areas to access secondary schools. The widespread poverty makes it difficult for parents to empower their daughters.
The project will Educate and Empower 100 girls annually in Sierra Leone . The girls will be provided with mentorship and offered scholarships. They will be trained on demand-led skills and life skills. Parents will be sensitized on the risk of child marriage and teenage pregnancy. Community leaders would be encouraged through advocacy to set and enforce laws that support girls Education.
The Girls will be able to get enrollned, retained and complete their education with dignity. The girls will be able to resist exploitation and become advocates for their rights and issues affecting them. Parents will be able to guide and protect their children not to become victims of child marriage and teenage pregnancy. The out-of-school girls become self-employed and job creators/entrepreneur. They become empowered to overcome the financial challenges they face.
