Programs

Akshara Foundation was established in March 2000 at the request of the Government of Karnataka. It was conceived as a tripartite partnership between the government, corporate sector and the voluntary sector with the mission: "Every child in school and learning well". The government took the lead in setting up the organization and allowing access to its schools; corporate leaders lent financial support and, community volunteers assisted in implementing the programs. In many ways, this is a unique model with a built-in capacity to address change at a mass scale. Akshara firmly believes in working with the government to bring about large scale and rapid changes. The programs therefore aim to supplement and not supplant the governmental efforts in universalizing primary education. We design the teaching learning material, the training modules, the assessment metrics and provide support in terms of monitoring and technology. This makes the programs sustainable and builds capacity within the school system for improvement. Since its inception in March 2000, Akshara has touched the lives of over one million children in the state of Karnataka, India. Programs: Akshara's preschool Program, Prepare Not Repair -: Akshara Foundation started its Balwadi programme in 2000 in Bangalore city, reaching out to 4-6 year-old children who had no exposure to the facilities of a preschool. Balwadis were established and run by volunteers from within the community. Akshara evolved a strategy to make the programme self-sustaining. In the last 5 years, over 400 EDUPRENEURS have been trained by Akshara to set up their centres, benefitting over 20,000 children. To reach out to a larger section of children who go to the Government preschool centres, Akshara has been supporting Anganwadis in Bangalore Urban District. In the last 3 years, Akshara has been working with around 2000 Anganwadi centres in Bangalore to provide quality preschool learning component impacting around 35,000 children each year. Moving forward, Akshara will continue to work with about 250 anganwadis (to be called model anganwadis) to show the effectiveness of the National Curriculum Framework-based curriculum. This effort has begun in 2014-15 and we are currently working in anganwadis in Bangalore Urban District, Malur in Kolar District and Dharwad. Oduve Nanu-Reading skills programme: The program aims at teaching Kannada and Urdu language skills using a set of story cards. This program has been very successful and has now been internalized within the government primary education system and has been taken across to all 46,000 government primary schools in the state. Swalpa English, Thumba Fun: This is an introductory English program which emphasizes on spoken English while also introducing students to entry level reading and writing skills. Teachers have hugely appreciated the training they received since it gave them much-needed opportunity to pick up and practise English skills. The package was designed to be teacher-friendly and child-appropriate in the context of local-language government schools. The Swalpa English, Thumba Fun program, has benefitted over 575 schools, 1300 teachers and 47,000 children in the last three years in Hoskote, Kushtagi and Mundargi blocks of Karnataka. Akshara Ganitha: This program is focused on improving the math skills in primary classes by making learning fun and relevant to everyday life and is taught using an activity based method. The items in the kit were designed after sufficient research so as to be attractive, sturdy and multi-faceted. It is a support programme aligned with the math syllabus and math textbooks that teachers follow in Karnataka. This program has benefited over 47,000 children, studying in 574 schools in the last three years in Hoskote, Kushtagi and Mundargi blocks of Karnataka. Ganitha Kalika Andolana: In February 2014 in the annual state budget presentation, the Chief Minister of Karnataka announced that : Akshara Foundation has developed Akshara Ganitha kits to facilitate teaching of Mathematics in simple way to enable the 4th and 5th standard students to understand Mathematics. These kits will be provided to students of Government schools in Hyderabad-Karnataka area in the first phase, in collaboration with Akshara Foundation utilizing the assistance from Hyderabad-Karnataka Development Board. Over the next three years, Akshara Foundation, will provide the leadership in taking effective quality early math education to all children in grades 4 and 5 in the state of Karnataka. For the next 3-5 years, Akshara will be supporting the roll-out of the math programme called Ganitha Kalika Andolana across the state in a phased manner. In 2015-16, we will be doing the six districts of the Hyderabad-Karnataka Region - the districts of Gulbarga, Raichur, Bidar, Bellary, Koppal and Yadgir which together have 7800 schools in 701 clusters and 33 blocks and we hope to reach out to over 305,000 children. The Classroom Libraries: The Classroom Library (TCL) is a suite of innovations that include: Selecting age-appropriate, graded books in multiple Indian languages and English; Setting up infrastructure; Training teachers; Measuring the reading habits and outcomes of children using biannual assessments and the Reading Histogram; and Collaborating with government to work on change from within the system. The TCL has already brought the world of books to children, with a TCL unit in around 1800 individual classrooms in around 440 schools in Bangalore; Hoskote block, Bangalore Rural district and Mundargi block, Gadag district. So far, over 105,000 books have been distributed to these libraries. Karnataka Learning Partnership: Akshara has also initiated the Karnataka Learning Partnership to foster awareness on the state of all primary schools in Bangalore, to promote database advocacy and disseminate information to various stakeholders. Special efforts are being made to reach out to elected representatives, besides involving community members and the teaching community. Please visit http://www.klp.org.in for details.
