African Rainforest Conservancy (ARC)

ARC's mission is to conserve Tanzania's Eastern Arc Mountains and Coastal Forests by raising the capacity of local conservation networks and encouraging sustainable economic development. Current projects are being implemented in two of Conservation International's "ten most threatened forest hotspots" - the coastal forests of Eastern Africa (#8) and the Eastern Afromontane (#10). These forest hotspots have as little as 10 percent of their original forest habitat remaining, yet are home to at least 1,500 plant species found nowhere else in the world. The Eastern Arc Mountains and Coastal Forests are globally important for their biodiversity values; nationally important ...

December 2012 Update

Greetings from Tanzania's Eastern Arc rainforest! We are writing with a quick update to let you know that your dollars are being put straight to work to conserve this precious forest. This project continues to support our field partner the Tanzania Forest Conservation Group (TFCG) in their efforts to keep these forests standing for the thousands of people who rely on them for their livelihoods and for the millions of animals who call them home. Current efforts are focused on the ongoing REDD project and a new five-year sustainable charcoal project aimed at promoting more sustainable charcoal production from community managed woodlots. TFCG's most recent The Arc Journal asks the question: "Do Tanzania's Eastern Arc Mountains have more species of amphibian than anywhere else in the world?" Click here to find out the answer for yourself and read more about what is going on in the field.

December 2012 Update

Greetings from Kanga Village! We are excited to report that this project is over half funded and we have just over $1,000 left to raise before we can fully implement it. With the initial funds this project has received we were able to purchase some of the required beehives and equipment for demonstration purposes and organize participants for their first training. We look forward to sharing photos in our next update and introducing you to the families participating in this project.

June Project Update

Did you know that this project has the potential for farmers to produces more than 50 liters of honey per year and earn as much as $400 annually in additional household income? For one of the world's poorest economies, where one-third of the population lives below the national poverty line, this is HUGE. And what is even more amazing about this project is that not only do local farmers profit from it, but the forests do too because farmers have an additional incentive to conserve the forests where the beehives are kept (we can't resist saying that this win-win situation is the "bee's knees"!). Thank you to generous donors like you, we are on our way to doing great things for Kanga Village's people and its forests.

We've been humbled by the generous support we've received to our two other projects on GlobalGiving and are hoping to take things up a notch with this project and have it fully funded by the end of the summer (we need just an initial $1,500 to launch it). To kick things off, we are excited to let you know that this Wednesday, June 13th is GlobalGiving Bonus Day and all donations to this project will be MATCHED at 50%!* Will you help make this project a reality? Your additional gift of $10 will become $15 and your $50 gift will become $75. Forward this email, post the report on your Facebook page, tweet about it on Twitter - tell your friends why you chose to support this project and ask them to make a gift too. It is amazing what we can accomplish when we all do our small part.

On behalf of all of us at ARC, THANK YOU for supporting Kanga Village's beekeeping project.

*Donations will be matched between 12:01am EDT and 11:59pm EDT on June 13th, up to $1,000 per donor.
